The US State Department has accused the Syrian government of carrying out mass killings of thousands of prisoners and burning the bodies in a large crematorium outside the capital.
The US State Department argued on Monday that about 50 prisoners a day are being hanged at the Saydnaya military prison near Damascus. The crematorium is allegedly used to hide the evidence of the killings.
Stuart Jones, acting assistant secretary for the State Department Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, gave reporters some “declassified” satellite pictures allegedly showing a building in the prison complex that has been modified to support the crematoriumy.
Last month, US President Donald Trump ordered a missile strike against an air field in Syria that US intelligence believes was used to carry out an April 4 chemical attack on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in the province of Idlib. However, the Trump administration has failed to provide any solid evidence that the Syrian military was behind the attack.
