President Trump revealed earlier this month that the US is currently developing hypersonic missiles and touted that the weapons were “big, powerful, lethal, and fast.”
Trump’s mention of hypersonic missiles occurred during his national address last Wednesday as he spoke about escalating tensions with Iran.

“Our missiles are big, powerful, accurate, lethal, and fast, “Trump said.
“Under construction are many hypersonic missiles. The fact that we have this great military and equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it. We do not want to use it. American strength, both military and economic, is the best deterrent,” he added.
The hypersonic missile under development that President Trump was likely referencing is the US Air Force Research Laboratory’s (AFRL) X-60A, an air-launched, single-stage rocket designed to reach speeds of Mach 5 to March 8, reported Flight Global.
AFRL moved a step closer to initial flight tests after it recently conducted test firings of its engines while on the ground at Cecil Spaceport in Jacksonville, Florida.
“This test series was a critical step in reducing risk and gathering necessary system integration data in preparation for our upcoming flight tests,” said Barry Hellman, AFRL X-60A program manager.
The X-60A has been designed to be air-launched from the undercarriage of a NASA C-20A, a military version of the Gulfstream III.
The initial flight test could take place in the second half of this year: “When we go to flight later this year, we hope to demonstrate the capability of the X-60A to provide affordable access to hypersonic flight conditions, which will position AFRL to deliver an innovative test capability for the Air Force and other [US Department of Defense] organizations,” Hellman said.
The hypersonic race is well underway. It has been said the US is falling behind the curve in hypersonic development as Russia and China race ahead with test flights and deployments.
The next global conflict will be fought with fifth-generation stealth fighters and hypersonic missiles.

What they are testing looks more like a rocket rather than an engine. Normally ram or scram jets are boosted in the atmosphere and then the ram/scram jet takes over. An engine offers completely different characteristics to a rocket.

Well, if so, the US can afford lots of these things. Russia can not without going bankrupt or forcing the Russian people to live as the North Koreans do. It was an arms race with the US that helped bring down the Soviet Union. And they were way bigger than the residual now called the RF. China is not foolish enough to play the same bankrupting game the Russians seem to like.
During the Cold War Russia had to maintain a larger army and support satellite countries. Now the exact opposite is true, it is the U.S. which has a larger air force, navy, army, and more military bases. We have to simultaneously pay for the maintenance of the old stuff while developing and paying for the new stuff.
Since Iran’s missile force is on mobile launch systems, our hyper-sonic weapons will be used to bomb stationary targets like oil refineries, bridges, factories, hospitals (we’ll claim bio-weapons), TV stations and other civilian infrastructure. Basically, an extremely expensive Dresden campaign.
Once these missiles actually work, the only way to defeat them is to hit their carriers before they are launched.
I’m not so sure about that, Chris. The US has war gamed every imaginable Iran scenario for decades – there was never a conventional weapons + armed occupation solution. It would require another draft (never very popular), a massive forward mobilization to the Middle East a la Iraq. And an Iranian war would still become unsustainable after a few weeks without suckering damn near every last NATO partner into supplying blood, arms and money. That’s not going to happen again (fool me once, etc.)
Then, after a sham ‘democratically-elected’ US puppet was installed, we would face decades of counterinsurgency warfare. And nobody sucks at counterinsurgency like the US does propping up our puppets. The Pentagon’s exit strategy? There IS NONE – there never is.
War gaming is useless when performed by chimps, but it has continually led the Pentagon to one, inevitable solution (in their small-penis reality): 1) false flag promoting sufficient outrage in the US, which will allow 2) CENTCOM to go to tactical or strategic nukes right from the start, and 3) allow total devastation of Iranian civilian and military infrastructure in a matter of days. We’ll stop when the rest of the world figures out what’s happening and demands that we stop. It will be too late for Iran by then. The calculus (by the Pentagon chimps) is that Russia would not make good on any threats about the US using nukes on Iran. I disagree.
