On May 29, a spokesperson for the US State Department Heather Nauert stated that “Turkey and the U.S. seem to have reached agreement on a roadmap” for Manbij.
“We don’t have any agreements yet with the Government of Turkey. We announced previously that the United States and the Turkish working group on Syria met in Ankara on Friday of last week. We’re continuing to have ongoing conversations regarding Syria and other issues of mutual concern,” Nauert said.
“I know that the Secretary looks forward to hosting Foreign Minister Cavusoglu on June 4th here in Washington for those conversations to continue.”
On May 25, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Turkey and the US had “outlined the main contours of a Road Map” for further cooperation in “ensuring security and stability in Manbij”. The Ministry alsi pointed out that two sides would “consider the recommendations” of the working group during the June 4 meeting.
Manbij has become a point of tensions between the NATO allies. The city is de-facto controlled by the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which Turkey sees as a “terrorist” offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). Washington has provided military support to the YPG to fight against ISIS and deployed US forces in Manbij in order to prevent Turkey from attacking the YPG in the area.
