In response to Russian and Chinese war threats, the U.S. Army debuted its new Air and Missile Defense framework, or AMD, on March 27 that will pursue multimission units and counter hypersonic missile or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks, the Army’s Space and Missile Defense Commander told Defense News in an interview during the Association of the U.S. Army’s Global Force Symposium.

Lt. Gen. James Dickinson said AMD would provide synchronized efforts to execute multi-domain operations, defend the country for emerging threats and succeed in future operational environments.

Top objectives of the new strategy include ensuring AMD forces can protect ground forces and defend critical assets on the modern battlefield and in the homeland. AMD forces are designed to help “create windows of superiority” in the air, so those infantry units have the ability to commandeer enemy territory successfully, Defense News said.

AMD forces align with the Army’s 2028 goal of modernized forces executing multidomain operations.

“Our vision is that the AMD force of 2028 will provide the combatant commanders with a flexible, agile, and integrated AMD force capable of executing multi-domain operations and defending the homeland, regional joint and coalition forces, and critical assets in support of unified land operations,” said Lt. Gen. Dickinson. “To do this, we will execute four lines of effort. We will modernize and develop AMD capabilities; build AMD capacity for multi-domain operations; provide trained and ready AMD forces; and maintain forward presence and build allied and partner capacity.”

AMD also erects the next generation Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense, or LTAMD, sensor as the replacement for the MIM-104 Patriot missile system.

The Army will continue developing Indirect Fire Protection Capability, or IFPC, that provides short-range defense against rockets, artillery, and mortars as well as hypersonic missiles and drones.

The service is also developing Short Range Air Defense, or M-SHORAD, that addresses an important capability gap in the European theater.

AMD is expected to link all of the service’s defense and missile systems into an integrated command system.

The strategy is expected to add directed-energy weapon systems to aircraft and ground vehicles to protect ground forces against rocket, artillery, mortar and drone threats.

The Army’s last AMD strategy was in 2012, according to Lt. Gen. Dickinson.

In the last five years, the threat of hypersonic missiles and drone attacks have sent American war planners back to the drawing boards. With AMD, the framework is now in place to develop a missile system that can not just protect American allies and troops on the modern battlefield, but protect critical assets in the homeland in the event of war.

First they might need to have a workable hypersonic missile to test against before they can start dreaming about shooting them down.

Barba_Papa

You forget the most important critical part, first come up with a shiny powerpoint presentation, then go to Congress to fleece it for more money. Worry about actually coming up with a working technical solution only after you get the money.

Harry Smith

And also, interception does not means destruction, but only that anti-missile blown up on the course of a warhead. Which is useless for most of Russian nuclear warheads. And BTW, both nuclear warheads and supersonic missiles maneuver at the final part of trajectory, while US corporations test their system for ballistic trajectory mostly.

Promitheas Apollonious

not test it ,but simulating what will do, IF they build one. Computer simulations and reality, is two different things all together. At the moment the anti ballistic systems the west has work only in holyshit movies.

Harry Smith

Oh yeah! Israeli Iron Dome and Hamas low-tech missiles are like 1+1, but who cares? :)

Promitheas Apollonious

beside the name is just junk as most anti ballistic western technology is with a rate of less than 10% success, in low tech missiles. That has been proved more times than not. In any case was speaking generally for what ever the west has to show and been actually tested in the field.

Harry Smith

I mean Iron Dome is not properly working against low-tech Hamas missiles and it’s common sens for the majority of people to figure out that if most sophisticated western anti-air does not work against low-tech, how then it will work against high-tech modern missiles? But it seems like nobody in the west can make 1+1.

Promitheas Apollonious

I understood that but here the discussion is not how ineffective iron dome is, but the anti ballistic technology of the usa as well nato. I agree with you on the israeli system.

Nigel Maund

Cracking comment and true!!

That is good point – there is interesting development story of the US AIM-9 family of missiles and how they were designed to ignore diversion flares and attack aircraft – but in development they were designed to do this around the logic of US’ own flares – and when time came, it turned out these missiles went straight for the Soviet flares, because they were completely different to US flares. Point being, trying to second guess a unknown technology, and its design logic, to counter it, is fraught with problems, we just rarely hear about them.

US Military has 120 F-35s (soon to have 1600 delivered by 2025) Add to that 200 F-22 raptors (most powerful plane in the world), 20 B-2 bombers And THAAD In other words, 100% air superiority, air defense superiority, and the ability to protect from hypersonic missiles

John Whitehot

In other words, you know nothing.

Promitheas Apollonious

try not feeding the trolls.

Valerianus Maximus

I am keenly interested to see how a terminal high altitude defense system counteracts missiles flying within the atmosphere.

zman

Yeah, but he has delusion on his side. He can just imagine victory in battle. If he loses, he can just re-set.

Wraith

more than someone obsessed with Disney World apparently

John Whitehot

at least i’m “obsessed” with something that can be publically revealed without risking incarceration or sanitary confinement.

Jesus

Stealth aircraft are white elephants since Russian multi bands radars can locate them and lock a missile on them. THAAD is a system that uses kinetic warheads against ballistic missiles on predetermined trajectories, it did not perform well in stimulated tests against capable missiles that have maneuverable warheads, it is useless against high end hypersonic missiles given its limited velocity. US does not have air superiority against Russian and Chinese A2AD deployments, and cannot protect its air assets and installations from a withering onslaught of ballistic and hypersonic missiles.

roger temple

1600 (!!?) F-35s. How nice for you. Great for everybody else as they don’t work.

Wraith

:) is that why super advanced S-300 were unable to shoot them down over Aleppo last week?

Wraith

Just an FYI: US Military has 200 F-22 Raptors currently. F-22 Raptor is the most advanced military aircraft in the world. -RCS of 0.0001^2 literally smaller than an insect on radar (CANNOT be detected by ANY radars) -long range AESA radar with 400km detection -extremely advanced ECM electronic warfare system capable of standoff/passive jamming -interception of enemy communications -most advanced air-air loadout in history -1 single F-22 beat 10 F-16s in a test, and in another test beat 10 F-15s Did I also mention how the US has 200 of them? :) In other words, the US Airforce can completely destroy an entire enemy’s naval fleet ONLY using F-22s

John Whitehot

“-1 single F-22 beat 10 F-16s in a test, and in another test beat 5 F-15s”

I’ve singlehandedly beaten 10 players at football once.

The key was to pay them to lose.

Valerianus Maximus

Umm, you forgot to mention that the F-22 can maneuver like a humming bird at Mach 2, has unlimited range, carries Mk LVI photon torpedoes, and is equipped with BlasTech turbo-lasers capable of penetrating the energy shielding of an Imperial-class star destroyer positioned for orbital bombardment.

PS. You really shouldn’t show off you jewish facial features so much. It gives away your game.

Promitheas Apollonious

retards have game? He is obviously a drug addict desperate for his next dosage.

Jesus

Sorry for your Hollywood script, events in Syria indicated that ROE F22 was designated for do not apply in real life, ground and air based EW blinded the F22 “super radar” and Suk 35 was able to get in the proximity of the F22 and turn behind it for an say kill. Suk 35 carrries more missiles, is more maneuverable, and has effective ground radar and EW support to identify and electronically blind the F22 for a turkey shoot.

Tsarski

American also had very advanced aircraft during the Vietnam war… how did that work out for them again???

Wraith

Americans learned they must fly higher and use electronic warfare/advanced countermeasures to defeat enemy radars. That’s why since the Gulf War, US aerial losses have been extremely low while pulverizing enemy air-defense and suppressing enemy air power effectively

Alan Foo

1985 plane has so advanced electronics? Using DOS system.?

What ate you taking

Promitheas Apollonious

exactly what is programmed to say you think he knows what is parroting?

Brian Michael Bo Pedersen

As usual, show me proof to back up your outrages statements. And as usual, you will never provides those.

You can call me Al

You do talk shite.

No. Built = 195 (8 test and 187 operational aircraft)

17 (Nearly 10 Percent of the US F-22 Inventory) Was Damaged or Destroyed in Hurricane Michael.

A Government Accountability Office report published in July indicated that less than half of the Air Force’s 186 F-22s — 80 airframes total — are mission-capable, with some 125 assigned to combat units — a rate, the Times points out, is the lowest in the Air Force due to the airframe’s costly and unique maintenance requirements.

The destruction of the Tyndall F-22s will have consequences far beyond a $7.5 billion loss to Pentagon.

Brian Michael Bo Pedersen

Its just an Hellfire pointed upwards?

Todd Allen

Russia is making hypersonic missiles and the US responds with cartoons?!? At least we will die laughing.

verner

some idiot below is telling the audience that moronistan (aka us) has zillion jets and zillion whatever but what the idiot doesn’t say is that moronistan hasn’t got one single soldier prepared to do the work – sure from a jet or some such thing, but boots on the ground, nah don’t think so. china and russia can put together armies with dozen of millions and they would all be prepared to swim across the sea in order to get to moronistan and take care of business and the criminally insane cabal in washington dc wouldn’t know what to do, one way or the other.

RichardD

This at best is all in the planning stage.

The US Army (August 2018) has no tested countermeasure for intercepting maneuverable hypersonic weapons platforms”

– United States Army Futures Command –

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Futures_Command

Stinger missiles of the type used by the M-SHORA system have been around for 40+ years and have no history or capability that I’m aware of taking down hyper sonic missiles of the type in the Russian arsenal. They only have a 3 mile range and a max speed of mach 2.5. As compared to the Panstir system with an 11 mile range and mach 4 speed.

There is no LTAMD Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense system to replace the sub hypersonic Patriot currently in production, or expected to be any time soon. While the Russian S-300 hypersonic system has been in production for decades. The Thaad system is only for high altitude ICBMs. And is ineffective against lower level targets.

RichardD

“President Bush Senior praised the system , saying it had a near perfect record (97% hit rate). Several years later, the US army admitted that the successful interception rate was in fact at around 40%. The Israeli authorities, however, say that there is no hard evidence of even one single successful intercept, but that maybe, just maybe, one of the 16 Scud missiles launched at Israel might have been intercepted by a Patriot missile. …

in Saudi Arabia on the 4th of November 2017 when Yemeni Houthis fired a ballistic missile aimed at Riyadh airport. Initial reports indicated the Burqan-2 missile had been intercepted by a Saudi Patriot system. But new research shows the Patriot’s battery fired 5 missiles and that all of them missed the incoming warhead. One of the Patriot’s missile might have hit part of the fuselage (missile might have separated or broken up mid-flight) but the warhead carried on unimpeded and actually flew over the Patriot battery before impacting 200 meters short of the runway.”
