FILE IMAGE: Russian Military Police service members are in Syria
On November 19, a patrol of the Russian Military Police came under attack after entering the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, which is held by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
Local gunmen, most of whom members of the SDF’s Deir Ezzor Military Council (DMC), opened fire from their assault rifles at the patrol right after it passed the al-Salhiyyah crossing that separates government and SDF-held areas. The gunmen were already waiting for the patrol.
The Russian patrol, which consisted of four armored vehicles, was escorted by two helicopters. However, they didn’t fire back at the attackers, likely because unarmed civilians were present at the scene.

According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and other Syrian opposition sources, no Russian service members were harmed. The Ministry of Defense of Russia has not commented on the dangerous incident, so far.
Following the attack, the US-led coalition deployed a unit near al-Salhiyyah crossing. US troops were seen standing side by side with the gunmen who carried out the attack.

In October, a group of DMC fighters prevented a patrol of the Russian Military Police from entering the town of al-Jininah in the western Deir Ezzor countryside. Back then, they didn’t fire at the patrol or attempt to assault Russian troops.
The DMC, led by former ISIS member Rashid Abu Khawla, is infamous for its criminal activities, mainly oil and drug trafficking. The formation enjoys very close relations with the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
It’s highly unlikely that DMC fighters acted on their own. The attack on the Russian patrol may have been a planned provocation meant to keep Russian troops away from the SDF-held part of Deir Ezzor. The SDF, whose troops were supposed to escort and guard the patrol, is yet to commented on the incident.
The attack will not likely go unpunished. Russian forces in Syria could respond by striking posts of the DMC, or even its illegal oil and drugs trafficking operations.

What a totally obscene, laughable situation for the Russian soldiers. They are being fired at but do not return fire. This is a f&cking war zone! Who the hell made the so-called “rules of engagement” for the troops? If US boys and girls were being shot at, would they show the same amount of restraint? Hell no! They would have returned fire with thousands of rounds and maybe called in an airstrike. Putin needs to tell his commanders on location that the velvet gloves need to come off or Russian bodies will be returning to to Russia in coffins, and soon.
The terrorist are scarred to death. They can only scream Allah Akbar and start shooting in the air when the Russian armed vehicles are hundreds yards away. Try watching it again and you may see brown spots on the terrorist’s pants.

They didn’t even need to fire back, they were well away from the checkpoint by the time these idiots started shooting wildly. I bet very few (if any) rounds even touched their armored vehicles, not that they would have done anything.
These guys just started firing after the convoy left as an ‘honor’ thing, because they think it makes them ‘brave’. They knew full well it wouldn’t turn into an actual fight. If it did, those helicopters would have ended them.
Well the Russian need to give them reason to rethink they positions. Nex time they do such a things and if I was the Russian,u wouldve sent the United States of command center a note that such facilities will be destroy and such facilities so evacuate your personel within 15 minutes.
SDF = curds. The solution is simple and it is why Putin has given Erdogan free hand sometimes, just retire 50km from Deir Ezzor and give the green light to the turks.

The Russians had enough fire power on those APCs and the two choppers to totally waste those animals,thats what they should have done to send a message,they didn’t look like SDF kurdish quislings they looked more like ISIS.

It was good of the idiots to wait until the patrol was well passed before opening up in a show of bravado to ensure no Russian was hurt. It appeased the ego’s of the idiots and ensured no response came back their way which would have caused the locals to spend the next day digging holes . A dangerous escalation and with US troops likely to be caught in the middle next time which could give them casus belli . Under such circumstances the US would probably encourage the locals so they can claim innocence . The fox in the henhouse blaming the cat for the need for retaliation.
ISIS, regardless of the pretense status of SDF, where SDF has no control.
