The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced on October 17 that their fighters repelled several new ISIS attacks on their positions north of the town of al-Baghuz al-Fawqani in the southeastern Deir Ezzor countryside.
“In the morning, the terrorist organization attempted to carry out a counter-attack on positions of our fighters south of the village of al-Susah [north of al-Baghuz al-Fawqani], using heavy weapons, however our fighters confronted and forced them to retreat,” the SDF media center said in an official press release.
Around the town of Hajin, SDF fighters captured few positions following heavy clashes with ISIS fighters. During their advance, US-backed fighters removed several IEDs, which had been planted by the terrorist group.
According to the SDF media center, 12 ISIS fighters were killed during the clashes around Hajin and north of al-Baghuz al-Fawqani. Furthermore, US-led coalition warplanes and rocket launchers struck several positions, vehicles and gatherings of the terrorist group.

Despite all the firepower of the US-led coalition, the SDF is yet to make any significant achievement on the ground. Last week even witnessed a successful counter-attack by ISIS, during which more than 36 US-backed fighters were killed and captured.
It seems victories for both SDF and SAA are becoming less and less frequent now. Maybe they’ve started to realise they are fighting a losing battle?

They are not supposed to make progress against Isis,they are a protected species.
I suspect there’s internal issues that are preventing the SDF from committing more troops, it always does take a lot of arm twisting to get the Arabs to do stuff. That said ISIS has got nowhere to go, and maybe if we threw a Ranger platoon in the mix this whole thing would progress faster.
They probably have enough troops on hand to conduct that operation in the manner it was planned. The SDF fell back to their rear positions before that dust storm hit so are probably waiting for replacement troops and supplies while taking a breather. I’m wondering how many ISIS fighters slipped west across the river during the dust storm since the SAA stationed along there wouldn’t of been able to see them?
