The US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have faced some problems with breaking the ISIS defense in the city of Raqqah.
According to pro-SDF sources, the US-backed group made some gains in the distrcits of al-Muazzafin, al-Hamra and Nazlat Shehada and killed 14 ISIS members. However, clashes are still ongoing in these areas and the districts have not been captured.
Considering the course of the SDF advance, the US-led force is not going to liberate the city in the nearest future.
At the same time, the Syrian military command used the SDF problems in Raqqah in order to launch a large-scale campaign against ISIS terrorists south of the Euphrates River. Government forces have captured a number of areas and now are taking control over important roads in the area.
The government advance cut off the possible SDF push towards Deir Ezzor through this area and contrubuted to future operations aimed at lifting the ISIS siege from the government-held city.

SDF advancing through heavy resistance from fortified positions while trying not to hurt the present civilians. They are doing fine. The latest counterattack repelled with heavy IS losses and Al Malik quarter now 90% liberated. They crossed the main road through the old city and are now assaulting the latest part of the old city.
So they are doing fine and nobody claimed they would take the whole city within weeks.
There will come a point that IS lines will break somewhere and at that time you can expect relatively large advances. The diameter of IS held city are now a little over 1 mile.

Last year, the U.S. demanded the YPG raise enough forces for the SDF to take Raqqa. The YPG responded by recruiting many Turkish Kurds for the YPG, but that wasn’t nearly enough. They also started press-ganging all fighting-age males in Qamishli into a reserve force called the HPX. Nearly all of those forced conscripts were Arab – the Kurdish men were already serving in the YPG. Many conscripts were not even Syrian – they were Iraqi Arab refugees.
The HPX conscripts were supposedly for local security and garrison duty and only had to serve nine months. Both turned out to be a lie. The HPX conscripts will have to serve as long as the SDF says so (indefinitely), and many were thrown into the front lines of Raqqa months ago (500 in Feb according to ANHA – maybe a few thousand today). These are guys with six weeks of training and an AK under the command of the US and YPG. They are being used as cannon fodder in Raqqa because the SDF is a U.S.-created sham and the YPG doesn’t have nearly enough fighters for U.S. land/resource grabbing..
Now the US has ordered the Kurtdish Asayish forces to round up all the rest of the fighting-age male Arabs in northern Syria for HPX conscription, including those in the refugee camps and those from newly ‘liberated’ areas. This is supposedly to gear up for a push to Deir EzZor. So by the SDF ‘liberating’ areas from ISIS, the U.S. actually means liberating surviving fighting-age males to be forced to serve in the SDF for U.S. interests (land/resource theft).
The SDF is not quite the happy, all-volunteer, highly-motivated organic force portrayed by the US. The YPG is stretched way to thin to be very effective, and the lightly-armed HPX conscripts are not going to fight or die for U.S./Israeli interests. Raqqa may take a very long time, indeed.
As far as I know HXP is still nine months. Conscription in Northern Syria is just as compulsary as in the rest of Syria, only there it is several years and until one is 42 and not 30 like Northern Syria.

If so, then that means they were held captive for months until the U.S. could cobble a training program together. You’d think that after the resistance ISIS was putting up in Mosul the US and SDF would have planned for this kind of battle. It would appear that they didn’t, or severely underestimated. On the other hand the SAA so far seems to have been lucky to avoid this kind of urban battle with ISIS. As Palmyra fell into SAA hands twice fairly easily. I wonder how much of a resistance ISIS will put up inside Sukhnah, or if they will cut and run once faced with imminent encirclement. Contrary to the Iraqi army, the Turks, the SDF and the US the SAA seems fairly content with just encircling enemy strongholds and move on, rather then take them against all costs. Which seems to be less fun for ISIS, as they can’t play their favorite game of drawing an enemy in and make them bleed for every home and street.

Assadophyle sourpissers, and others too, will be pleased to know that, acc to normally accurate twitteraccounts, the advances of SDF in the south west (Shadaada?) and south east (Al Malik?) are going very rapidly now, after repelling a large counterattack with many IS killed The areas with clashes (not yet full control) have neared eachother with a gap of just a few hundred meters.
If this continues like this, the whole southern part of Raqqah will soon be under full SDF control.

Now for some Kurdish fun facts, it seems that the SAA made a foothold on the Euphrates and can move fast, hopefully getting to deir ezzor long before the Kurds and their fan boys capture raqqa. The strategy seem to be to move vast forces through the desert, and then attack north and east simultaneously, thereby pinning ISIS in a situation where they could be surrounded at any moment, they are being attacked on two axis, with the third being the river, and the SDF waiting on the other side. This is a brilliant strategy.
I am wondering whether or not a portion of the SAA force will travel south to secure the cross roads. It seems strategically valuable and would allow for an independent route towards deir ezzor. It would also make it easier to cut ISIS reinforcement.
I dont know if you guys noticed, but the pocket near al tanf disappeared of the map today. This should free up a substantial amount of SAA soldiers and shorten the line of the front. I wonder if some of those men could be redeployed for the siege of As Sukhanah.
