Carrier strike group (CSG) is an operational formation of the United States Navy. It is centered on an aircraft carrier and a carrier air wing (CVW) of 65 to 70 aircrafts. It’s composed of roughly 7,500 personnel, an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron of at least two destroyers and/or frigates. A carrier strike group also, on occasion, includes submarines, attached logistics ships and a supply ship. Carrier strike groups comprise a principal element of U.S. power projection over the world’s oceans.

Always interesting to see how little time US aircraft carriers spend at sea. This is probably a consequence of the exorbitant cost of sea-going operations. It could also be a result of massive amount of in-port maintenance work these ships require. These “land-based” aircraft carriers have been an incredible rip-off of US taxpayers.

Assad must stay (gr8rambino)

better at home than causing trouble out there :))

Battleship Yamato was jokingly referred to as Hotel Yamato, because it spent lots of time in port. Aircraft carriers made battleships obsolete, and have taken their place as the biggest and baddest ships (also, floating hotels).

Older pix of hotel row in Norfork, I count 5 carriers and 3 LHAs!. :) https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/53c0cd9ce9a37cbbe3b29d6fea665f5ec1afdcc72e336fb276962bd54419b369.jpg

People here always tlk about money.

Facts are that parts of the Hangar jobs are replaced by satelites, drones and internet. Nothing wrong here, when I can replace with better and cheeper.

Sinbad2

So they build billion dollar ships they are not going to use? I’m sure that makes sense to you.

Jens Holm

I did not write that at all.

The new ones are not like the old ones.

Sinbad2

Only lately, only a couple of years ago they had every ocean covered. The US is bankrupt, and cannot afford to put its ships to sea. The same thing happened prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Ivan Freely

Surprised none are heading to Syria.

zman

The US knows they would be floating targets, hence none are there. Iran already let the US know that they would make artificial reefs out of them in a conflict. As I told a troll who kept going on about how Iran could never be a power because it had no real air force, planes will be obsolete soon, except for support. Main attacks and ‘softening up’ is now done by missiles(since GW1). Iran made a wise choice developing new missiles and thousands of them. Easier, cheaper to produce stand-off weapons than aircraft…and no pilots needed.

Jens Holm

Thats not even the points. Far out.

I wonder why somebody should be a troll in that context at all.

Sinbad2

Still too scared to enter the Persian Gulf. I had to laugh when the Americans sent the French carrier into the gulf.

Jens Holm

Its not about scared. Its about having, making and avoiding confrontations.
