The United States has deployed additional 40 troops to boost the security of American embassy in South Sudan. The move came just days after a spat of fighting killed hundreds in the country’s capital.
The deployed troops are likely a contingent from the U.S. Marine Corps’ crisis-response force based out of Morón, Spain. They will help with the departure of the embassy’s “non-essential personnel.” According to reports, the facility is not evacuating.
Clashes between troops loyal to South Sudan’s president and its vice president started in Juba, South Sudan’s capital last week. Hundreds were reportedly killed. Some United Nations camps came under mortar and machine-gun fire by Sudanese forces. Two Chinese UN peacekeepers were killed.
