The US has decided to deploy a Patriot missile defence battery and the USS Arlington amphibious transport dock to the Middle East amid increasing tensions with Iran.
According to the existing data, the USS Arlington, which carries marines, amphibious vehicles, and rotary aircraft, as well as the Patriot missiles, is set to join the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, which is currently sailing in the Red Sea.
“The Acting Secretary of Defense has approved the movement of USS Arlington (LPD-24) and a Patriot battery to US Central Command (CENTCOM) as part of the command’s original request for forces from earlier this week.
These assets will join the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a U.S. Air Force bomber task force in the Middle East region in response to indications of heightened Iranian readiness to conduct offensive operations against U.S. forces and our interests,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
Earlier in the week, a US Air Force bomber task force, including B-52 bombers, arrived at the US airbase Al Udeid in Qatar. This deployment was also described by the US as a measure to deter Iran.
