On February 22, the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted an airstrike on terrorists of al-Qaeda-affiliated Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen in Somalia.
The airstrike, which was carried by General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper combat drone, followed an attack by al-Shabab terrorists on allied Somali forces in Duduble, about 40 miles northwest of the capital, Mogadishu.
In a statement released a day after the airstrikes, the AFRICOM said that a battle-damage assessment is still pending. However, the command noted that no civilians were believed to have been harmed.
“The Federal Government of Somalia and the US remain committed to fighting al-Shabaab to prevent the deaths of innocent civilians. Violent extremist organizations like al-Shabaab present long-term threats to the US and regional interests,” the statement reads.
The airstrike was the first such military action by the US against al-Qaeda affiliates in East Africa since August of last year. Back then, the target was also terrorists of al-Shabab in Somalia.
Al-Shabab maintains a strong presence and influence in Somalia despite facing serious competition from other terrorist groups. ISIS branch in Somalia, Abnaa ul-Calipha, recently released photos showing one of its large training camps in the country.
