The US Army in Afghanistan announced that a US helicopter crashed in Logar province in eastern Afghanistan on October 27. The US-NATO mission in Afghanistan “Resolute Support” said in an official statement that a US soldier was killed, and 6 others were injured in the helicopter crash.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our comrade … On behalf of all of Resolute Support, our heartfelt sympathies go out to the families and friends of our fallen comrade and those injured in this unfortunate event,” General John Nicholson, a commander of Resolute Support, said.

The Taliban news agency Voice of Jihad claimed that the helicopter was shot down by Taliban fighters in Kharwar district of Logar province. Voice of Jihad added that the helicopter was hit when it was about to land in attempt to conduct a raid against a position of the Taliban. Voice of Jihad went on and claimed that 43 US soldiers and Afghan soldiers were killed in the helicopter crash. This number does not look reasonable.

However, Resolute Support announced that the helicopter crash was not caused by enemy fire. Furthermore, Salim Saleh, spokesman for Logar province governor told the Associated Press (AP) that the helicopter made an emergency landing because it hit a tree while it was taking.

“We can confirm the crash was not the result of enemy action. We have full accountability of all personnel and the crash site has been secured,” Resolute Support’s official statement said.

Since 2001 the US Army and NATO lost more than 107 helicopters over Afghanistan. However, only 27 were actually shot down by the Taliban.
