Fabien Clain
The US-led coalition confirmed on February 28 that Fabien Clain, a French media official of ISIS, was killed in an airstrike near the town of al-Baghuz al-Fawqani in the Middle Euphrates River Valley.
“Combined Joint Task Force – Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) continues to target Daesh [ISIS] in Syria while disrupting attempts to reemerge in liberated areas as they plot attacks globally,” the coalition said in a short press release.
The rumors of Clain’s death surfaced in several French outlets last week. According to a report by France Info, the airstrike that took the terrorist’s life was conducted on February 20.
Clain, who is known by his nom de guerre Abu Anas al-Faransi, converted to Islam in 1990s and began to pursue a radical path in the first half of the 2000s. According to the available information, he joined a radical group in town of Artigat in Toulouse. The group was directed by radical scholar Olivier Corel.
In 2009 members of this group were charged with terrorist offenses. Clain was presented as an “organizer” of a group and sentenced to five years in jail. After being released from French prison in 2014, Clain headed to join ISIS in Syria.
The terrorist is believed to be linked to several terrorist attacks in France. On the day before the November 2015 Paris attacks, Clain release a recording in which he personally claimed responsibility for the attacks.
“[This] is only the beginning of the storm and a warning for those who want to meditate and remove their lessons,” a translation of his recording reads.
The death of Clain is a huge blow to ISIS, which lost many of its foreign commanders in the last few months. Most of the remaining foreign terrorists are currently surrendering to US-backed forces.
