The US-led coalition had reactivated two bases in the Syrian governorate of Raqqa, the Anadolu Agency reported on April 27.
In October 2019, the US-led coalition withdraw all of its forces from areas held by its proxy, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), in the northeastern Aleppo countryside and Raqqa. The withdrawal was carried out to facilitate a Turkish-led attack on the SDF.
According to the Anadolu Agency, US-led coalition troops returned to the 17th Division base, some seven kilometers to the east of Raqqa city, as well as to Tabqah Air Base in the southern countryside of Raqqa. Several armored vehicles and at least nine Bradley infantry fighting vehicles were allegedly deployed in the two bases.
The Turkish state-run news agency said that the US move was a response to Russia who stepped up its military presence in Raqqa recently.
Some parts of the Anadolu Agency’s report are questionable. For example, the US-led coalition can’t possibly return to Tabqah Air Base because a large Russian force is known to be deployed there.
The US-led coalition is not only working to expand its military presence in northeastern Syria, but also to boost military support for the SDF.
On April 29, a military source in the SDF revealed to the London-based New Araba a US military delegation including senior officials had arrived in northeastern Syria.
“The American delegation, which includes senior American officials, will meet with the SDF in the coming days,” the unnamed source said. “The meeting will focus on increasing technical and military support for the SDF, as well as on discussing several military matters in the region”.
The US-led coalition’s attempts to expand its presence in northeastern Syria could lead to problems with Russia, Syrian government forces and even Turkey.
