US Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats confirmed on Tuesday that the US is considering new attacks against the Syrian government, which would be justified by chemical weapons attacks allegedly conducted by government forces.
“As you saw the president’s response to the attack last year, this is something that is under serious discussion as we speak, but again, something that needs to be discussed in a classified session,” Coats told a Senate committee, recalling to a Tomahawk missiles strike at the Shairat airbase in Syria.
Earlier the Washington Post reported that the Trump administration had started considering new strikes on Syria last week. Initially, the Pentagon rebuffed the report. However, now it looks that the White House is really preparing for new attacks.
Reports about alleged chemical attacks by government forces in Eastern Ghouta has started appearing on a constant basis since the start of the Syrian Arab Army’s operation in the region. By March 7, government forces have achieved a notable progress against militants and liberated a large area from them.

I’m personally doubtful as to effectiveness of upgraded AD systems of both Syria and Iran. Both countries basically stopped investing in it some time in the early 1980s – Syria as a political choice and Iran as a result of US sanctions. Now Syria has an added negative bonus of it’s network gutted by Al Qaida attacks and IAF bombing, but then again rebuilding it will be a straight forward thing. Iran is a bit complicated. They claim numerous indigenous systems but still have 1970s Hawks and S-200s as backbone of AD network. On the other hand they did bring down a US drone, unharmed, few years ago so they are not exactly helpless. But both countries major problem is the air force – or virtual non existence of one to be precise. In order to be able to put up some kind of a fight they need a lot of modern stuff and dozens of modern planes plus 1000s of hours of training. That costs money but it also takes months or years to put into place. Without it, they can achieve an odd “bird strike” and “pilot error” but nothing more…
