UPDATE: 8 people were rescued. 3 are still missing.

A US Navy aircraft crew and passengers has crashed into the ocean southeast of Japan’s Okinawa, the US Navy reported on November 22.

According to the statement, “the aircraft was en-route to the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), which is currently operating in the Philippine Sea.”

The cause of the crash is not known. The names of the crew and passengers have not been disclosed so far.

Japanese Minister of Defense Itsunori Onodera told the media that 8 of the missing have been found. However, their condition is unclear.

The incident is the latest in a series of US Navy incidents this year. Earlier in November, a US Navy destroyer collided with a Japanese tugboat in Sagami Bay. In June, seven sailors were killed when the USS Fitzgerald collided with a Philippines container ship southwest of Yokosuka.
