The US Navy will pause operations worldwide amid a series of collisions with its warships, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson. He also announced a fleet-wide operational pause and investigation into Navy operations around Japan.
“As you know, this is the second collision in three months and the [latest] of a series of incidents in the Pacific theater. This trend demands more forceful action. As such, I’ve directed an operational pause be taken in all of our fleets around the world.
I want our fleet commander to get together with their leaders and their commands to ensure that we’re taking all appropriate to ensure safe and effective operations around the world.
In addition to that operational pause, I’ve directed a more comprehensive review to ensure that we get at the contributing factors – the root causes – of these incidents,” Richardson said.
The most recent collision took place between the destroyer John S. McCain and a merchant ship east of the Strait of Malacca before the dawn on Monday. As a result, 5 US servicemen were injured and 10 others went missing.
Separately, Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced that a probe probe into recent collisions has been ordered, including a separate investigation into the recent incident with USS John S. McCain.

This freighter was on automated course from Taiwan to Singapore the USS McCain was for some reason idle in the water maybe the commander was doing his common core math and the command should be vilified top to bottom. This has nothing more to do other than having incompetent officers on deck.

I have a problem with this report. How is it possible that seaman are injured or “missing”? Can a collision be so unaware that someone (10) goes overboard? Look at the damage. Most of it is under the waterline. Was that really a collision with a “merchant ship” ? Alternative ….. Are we seeing the modern form of a commerce raider , which doesn´t attack with weapons but with ramming?

Such a freighter with its bulbous bow can even break apart a destroyer of this size. Question is if the destroyer is still straight in shape or became a banana. Which means, not only the compartments directly around the damage seen from above the waterline are damaged, but others around them might too, due to welds cracking. It’s very likely that the ten who are missing are located in these compartments.
Whoever was on deck, could have been thrown overboard when “a wild boar” kicks from the side. An earthquake is nothing compared to that.
I understand perfectly that a collision is a very heavy kick. But people on deck normally see another ship aproaching and take appropiate action not to go overboard. Including in heavy fog or at night you can have a warning at least 30 seconds in advance without any radar.
Perhaps the US crew were playing World of Tanks on their smart phones :) Then reality struck. I will shed as many tears for them as they would have done for me and I only have a small tissue.

The side armour was adequate, the deck armor was not. It was a concept the British tried by gaining speed and firepower at the expense of some protection before the advent of carriers. Speed, firepower and protection ratios are important since they provide the platform with a balanced capability.

US needs to work on advanced radar that would be able to see the “stealthy” cargo ships and oil tanker. They are so stealthy for US navy.
Yes, many of these cargo ships are now being made with special radar absorbing materials. Along with also a thin rubber skin to reduce their acoustic signature like the subs use. So now even the towed sonar arrays are having trouble spotting them! :D
It is either crew ineptitude, or the navigational system is and radar were “hacked” by an advanced adversary. The circumstances of a previous collision are eerily similar.

I agree. I have also thought about the possibility that someone like perhaps ‘China’ maybe has paid off and carefully orchestrated these accidents through well planned intelligence. Not as an act to start war, but to avert war and show the US that someone else can also subtly play their games as well. As long as a few extra US ships are constantly kept from being operational for a strike on China, then perhaps the US never gets around to it. Same way Iran played with the US like when the announced to the world that they had just received S-300 system from another anonymous country. Then a few years later the US admitted they were fixing to attack Iran that week when the news leaked and the US had to go back to the drawing board. Iran never received it years ago, but yet it prevented the war though Israel and the US learned later they lied. My guess is this is a possibility. Perhaps even Russia lightly sharing intelligence with China to help pull of these ‘accidental’ collision. If so, I think it is very justified and is helping to avert war. I do not even think they mean for any sailors to die, they are simply trying to place important US ships in dock for many months of repair.
Liberians and Philippines have been working on using cargo freighters as stealth ships they travel at 13-14 knots so they are probably to stealthy for US radar and people on the obs deck.
I guess they have build some cargo ships that are not only stealthy in radar but also in the visual spectrum of light, that’s why navy sailors could not even see it coming. :)
