About once a decade the USA funds a laser weapons prototype and every time it’s abandoned because laser weapons only work in ideal atmospheric conditions and the atmospheric conditions at sea are never ideal. Combat aircraft today operate at standoff ranges well out of range of lasers.
You can get more range out of a laser by using more power however your returns in range diminish exponentially in that it take more and more power to get smaller and smaller returns and few naval vessels can generate the kind of power necessary to run laser weapons let alone fire at the speed to take out a volley of missiles fired at them.
On top of that objects travelling through the atmosphere at hypersonic speed fly so fast they generate a plasma bubble around them that lasers can’t penetrate. This makes them useless against hypersonic cruise missiles and ballistic warheads.
So if you had a platform with a huge generator (nuclear) you could probably shoot down a volley of missiles at close range provided they were sub hypersonic speed in ideal weather conditions. Gatling guns do the same job in all weather and can be mounted on the deck of any ship so do you throw money down the laser sinkhole or use the simpler but effective weapons you already have?
BTW physics is the same for everyone on this planet so Russian and Chinese laser weapons won’t work either despite propaganda claims.

Lasers, the dream way to save stocking ammo is an okay defense against drones. But using energy based weapon and keeping it trained on a hypersonic missile for 5 secs, a missile already designed with intense heat shielding, good luck with that.
They don’t say what the range was and what the weather conditions were like. They also don’t say if the target aircrafts speed and direction were known to the laser operator.
They’ve been able to do that with a laser since the 1980’s. The problem was that they couldn’t get a decent range out of the weapon because of atmospheric conditions in the skies over the ocean. Fog, haze and air currents cause the beam to bloom reducing it’s power.
It’s also way easier to shoot down an aircraft if you know where to look.

Ive used lasers many times in the army, and if you cant literally see the target you cant “hit” it. And dont forget than anything near rain or mist immediately “kills” any focused energy.
