US Senators Call For 'Prompt Multinational Freedom of Navigation Operation' In Kerch Strait

On December 19th, a resolution was introduced in the US Senate called for a international freedom of navigation military operation in the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov, in addition to urging the cancellation of Nord Stream 2 and for EU to refuse access of Russian vessels to their ports.

Approximately 40 Senators introduced the bill, spearheaded by Senators Ron Johnson (R) and Dick Durbin (D).

“The United States and our allies need to rapidly counter Russia’s military aggression in the Kerch Strait with strong and resolute action,” Johnson said in a statement.

Initially, on December the 19th, the Hill reported that in the bill Senators are “calling for the pipeline’s cancellation due to its threat to European energy security, and calling on the Russian Federation to guarantee freedom of navigation in the Kerch Strait.”

However, in the final draft of the resolution it rather calls for “a prompt multinational freedom of navigation operation in the Black Sea” in addition to the cancellation of the Nord Stream 2.

It is based upon the annexation of Crimea and events following it, including a December 12th resolution by the EU that passed with overwhelming support, condemning both the Russian aggression in the Kerch Strait and the construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline.

It also noted a resolution passed by the US House of Representatives on December 11th, calling on the EU to reject the Nord Stream 2 pipeline and urging the President to use all available means to promote energy policies in Europe that reduce European reliance on Russian energy exports.

On the basis of this, the resolution makes 10 requests to the President and NATO:

  • Calls on the POTUS to “promptly lead a robust multi-national freedom of navigation operation in the Black Sea to help demonstrate support for internationally recognized border, bilateral agreements and safe passage through the Kerch Strait and Sea of Azov and to push back against excessive Russian Federation claims of sovereignty”;
  • Calls on NATO to “enhance allied maritime presence and capabilities, including maritime domain awareness and coastal defense in the Black Sea in order to support Freedom of Navigation Operations and allied interests”;
  • Urges the POTUS to “use the authority provided under section 1234 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 to enhance the capability of the Ukrainian military”;
  • Urges the POTUS to “through the Departments of State and Defense to provide additional security assistance to Ukraine, especially to strengthen Ukraine’s maritime capabilities, in order to improve deterrence and defense against further Russian aggression”;
  • Reiterates the POTUS “is required by statute to impose mandatory sanctions on the Russian Federation under CAATSA”;
  • Emphasized that any and all sanctions on Russia are a result of “of the actions of the Russian Federation and will continue to increase until there is an appropriate change in Russian behavior”;
  • Calls the US partners and allies in the EU to “deny Russian Vessels access to their ports to resupply and refuel”;
  • Notes the Resolution by the Congress on December 11th calling for the cancellation of the Nord Stream 2;
  • Applauds and concurs the EU resolution of December 12th condemning the Russian aggression in the Kerch Strait and the Nord Stream 2;
  • Finally, urges the POTUS to “continue working with Congress and our allies to ensure the appropriate policies to deter the Russian Federation from further aggression”;

The bill has not been voted in the US Senate as of December 21st, given it passes, it must also pass a vote in the US Congress and then be accepted by the US President.

Here is the problem. This is not going fly, that is a given. There will be shooting. Second, when it does fail the negative impact on the US Congress will be serious. We are pulling out of Syria and maybe Afghanistan so, why would the international community jump on board that bandwagon. The US was defeated in Syria and just because the crybabies and loonies in the US government are freaking out, doesn’t mean the rest of the world will follow them.

It would be far better for the US to generally shut-up and reflect upon it’s actions at this time and then begin to quietly put together their next move. However, the insane rarely follow solid logic. My take, enjoy the noise from the nuts. I wish well to all.

Kelli Hernandez

Perhaps the pull out of troops is to catch a bigger fish: RUSSIA NONE OF THIS IS OUR BUSINESS .US DICTATING EU BUSINESS WITH RUSSIA BECAUSE THE US CANT COMPETE WITH RUSSIAS UNLIMITED RESOURCES. The US should just fuck all off.

US SENATORS CALL FOR ‘PROMPT MULTINATIONAL FREEDOM OF NAVIGATION OPERATION’ IN KERCH STRAIT

These senators have tiny brains like rat. Russia will put sweet there in the Kurch strait as people put sweet to the rat to come inside Russia but that is a trap. LOL.

Promitheas Apollonious

Time for the fat lady to sing for the americans and wake them up to reality. Their impression that are isolated and out of reach it be a very bad wake up call for them when their illusions are dissolved and replaced with reality.

Cancelling Nord Stream 2 has nothing to do with Europes energy security but with selling overpriced US LNG (which wouldnt be able to meet all demand)

occupybacon

It has 100% to do with EU security since Russia uses the money from EU to build new toys, pay Donbas mercs and influence agents in the EU (ex: Gerhard Schröder), then NATO has to spend another money to counter that. Cutting Russia from GerMoney is vital for Europe. Germany should be the first who drink some Azov water.

Tudor Miron

Little Ukro, “Germany should be the first who drink some Azov water.”(c) – here we see your true nature. Same as your beloved blood thirsty pederast Bandera you’re dreaming about being occupied by Germans. What a prostitute of a country (Ukrostan/Khazarian kaganat v3.0). Why don’t you tell us the truth? That Nord steam 2 makes that rusty ukro pipe (transit) useless? Did you pay your december gas bills, ukro? Keep jumping and singing “Москаляку на гиляку, кто не скачет, тот москаль”.

occupybacon

Yeah, all the Moskal orcs back to Baikal and Amur river where they came from :) is the little orc happy? Joking with you, little orc, I was meaning that NATO should ask Germany to cross the Kerch strait before they continue with the NS2. And btw Khazars run Moscow businesses, Putin is one of them.

Tudor Miron

Surely NATO have to ask Germany, no point asking spread legs Ukraine – she’s ready.

occupybacon

Since Trump gave a sign that ‘never ending war in the middle east’ era is over, NATO will have time to take a closer look at the Black and Baltic seas. Oh I forgot gas flowing through Turkish Stream/Blue Stream should not reach EU either. Traitorous countries should leave NATO and join Eurasia project or whatever.

Tudor Miron

If you say so. So now it is you, Ukraine who’s making desisions in NATO? “Oh I forgot gas flowing through Turkish Stream/Blue Stream should not reach EU either. ” (c) all that in order to keep the rusty ukro transit gas pipe full? Yeah! NATO is ready to fight till the last Ukrainian.

You can call me Al

What a ridiculous comment.

occupybacon

I’m satisfied that you’re enjoyed

FlorianGeyer

And also to make EU goods uncompetitive with US junk.

You can call me Al

I am sick and tired of everything that comes out of the Yankers mouths; they all seem to be delusional, war loving, incompetent, evil twats – sink some Yank vessels and tell them to go and rot in hell.

occupybacon

Maybe you should read more than the titles, it’s all about the NS2 ;)

You can call me Al

Why the fuck would the Germans risk being frozen to death ?.

Nothing will happen to stop the Nord Stream 2, so that never crosses my mind, so why you continue to bring it up baffles me.

FlorianGeyer

Its on the narrative of the week email he received from Tel Aviv Al.

occupybacon

Bibi and MBS say hello

FlorianGeyer

Hello to them as well.

occupybacon

How many Germans had frozen to death because of lack of Russian gas since WW2?

Which is the largest importer for EU goods? https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/statistics-explained/index.php/USA-EU_-_international_trade_in_goods_statistics

As you can see there is an over 100 billions negative balance, EU could fix that by buying American LNG or the automobile industry will suffer.

FlorianGeyer

I would allow one of the super carriers into the Sea of Azov though Al.

That would be a hoot. The US planes would need the ability to take off from a 30 degree list deck :)

ruca

They can’t seem to understand that it’s only 7m deep, at the deepest. Max draft 5m. Learn to read idiots.

Chris Chuba

While the Senate is arrogant and evil (twin brothers), they are calling for FON exercises in the Black Sea, not the Sea of Azov. People who are evil know how to wield their black magic.

FlorianGeyer

You are very wrong ‘ruca’. The US Navy has just spent billions of dollars on these two new ships to show the US flag on the Sea of Azov. The US navy are stupid enough not to realise the Sea of Asov is shallow :)

ruca

As shallow as their political might :D

Tudor Miron

” pipeline’s cancellation due to its threat to European energy security”(c) – yeah, being able to heat their home during winter is extremely dangerous and undermines Eropean energy security. They should have said it plain and simple: “No energy = no problems. Cold but safe.” :)

Jean de Peyrelongue

That Senator does not even know where is the Kerch strait !

Rick E.

What a bunch of crap! So the USA is actually going to pass a law “legalizing” trespassing in Russian waters! Perhaps Russia should send 20 battleships to the international waters boundaries right off of the coast of New York City along with China.

In essence, my delusional government is passing a law facilitating the start of WW3! Come on Russia and China, stand up to the world’s bully!

FlorianGeyer

Russia and China will I am 100% sure of that.

dutchnational

Maybe Russian access to Bosporus should be linked to Ukrainian access to Sea of Azow, both covered by treaties signed by Russia or a predecessor.

George King

Turkish trade is dependent on Russian ships freedom of navigation through the Bosporus. You forget the events leading up to using Turkey as a false flag by NATO in Syria, EU rejection and assassination attempt on Erdogan for a coup to pull Turkey back into vassal status. More likely that it will be NATO war ships that are not allowed access resulting in some quarantined in the Black Sea with no way to escape. So Turkey may have that opportunity to use the same black mail as we are seeing with the US via Canada against China.

American senators should go to hell – the best place for those demons.
