At least three US military bases could be established in Argentina’s provinces of Neuquen, Misiones and Tierra del Fuego, the Mexican news portal Aristegui Noticias.
According to the media outlet, the creation of the military bases will be supervised and financed by the US Southern Command. Argentina’s President Mauricio Macri has reportedly given the green light to this move and Security Minister Patricia Bullrich was one of the key supporters of the idea.
The report states that the formal goal of this move is to boost security in Argentina and in the surrounding area. However, according to experts, this is a clear continuation of the long-standing US policy aimed at boosting military and political presence in Southern America and consolidating its de-facto dominance in the region.

Well, there is the continuing dispute between Argentina over the Falkland Islands. And there has been a history of enmity between Argentina and Chile. And I think a dispute over Tierra del Fuego. And considering that the various economic antics of previous Argentine governments have basically turned the Argentine military into a joke I wouldn’t be surprised if Argentina was seeking to bolster its regional standing by making itself more useful to the US then its neighbors.

I reckon that with their military having a history of making brutal coups and killing thousands of its own citizens, giving the Argentine military new shiny toys is not exactly a vote winner for Argentine politicians.

My take for long term? Antarctica will be carved up for mining etc as the Antarctic treaty has been going too long. So USA puts its army close to it to scare other countries from benefitting from their land.
