On January 26, a document containing a political plan presented by the US, Saudi Arabia, France, Jordan and the UK to the UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura was leaked, according to Reuters and the Lebanese Mayadeen TV. The plan contained what the five countries called a “practical approach” to a “slow” political process in Syria.

In the plan, the five countries called for a UN-supervised election for the -Syrians inside and outside the country and for radical changes in the Syrian constitution including stripping the Syrian presidency from most, if not all, of its powers.
The five countries also suggested stripping the Syrian government from many of its powers and creating two parliaments that will have limited powers. This will leave most of the state’s establishments under the control of the local authorities in a decentralized political system.
Syrian pro-government activists described the proposed constitution as an attempt to legalize the stateless situation in some parts of Syria in order to end the Syrian state once and for all.
Bashar Jaafari, the Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations, rejected the Arab-Western plan and stressed that its content contradicts with the international resolutions, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Jaafari also said that the plan undermines the Geneva talks and the upcoming Sochi conference and described the plan as a “black comedy” and criticized the US, Saudi Arabia, France, Jordan and the UK.
“How can a state like this [the US] whose hands are covered in Syrian blood and has directly attacked Syria talk about the political solution and the future in Syria … How can countries such as Britain and France, who follow American policy like the blind leading the blind, envision of any solution or political horizon in Syria? And a state like Jordan, which hosts the secret military operations room and has opened its territory to terrorists … how can it talk about sovereignty, politics, and participation in making a political solution in Syria? …And last but not least, Saudi Arabia, … how can such a medieval country contribute to devising an advanced vision for a Syrian constitution? This rally is a black comedy,” Jaafari said according to SANA.
From its side, several parties of the Syrian opposition also rejected the leaked plan. The Syrian opposition platform in Moscow slammed the US-led block for intervening in Syria’s internal affairs.
Several Arab and Western countries have presented similar plans over the past seven years and like those previous attempts the new plan will likely fail.
What a shameless joke! I can’t believe it! France has a hyper-president where the president rules during his term like a monarch, deciding solely about wars and have the possibility (often used) of passing laws without consulting the parliament… And for Jordan and Saudi Arabia.. no comment…. I was trying to think of the commonality amongst this cabal, and the only shared characteristic obvious to me is a mindless, drooling support for the interests of Israel. Jordan is, of course, just the paid help for the others, but it’s nice to see them tossed in as if they really mattered.
The ‘plan’ as it were should be familiar to everyone here – this is the Syrian National Coalition sure-to-fail neocon plan from 2012 – the one rejected by both al Nusra and the Kurds. Al Nusra will not matter soon, but I see the plan has been polished up with a bit to have greater appeal to the PYD’s Weakness through Federalism by Committees scheme being rammed down the Kurds’ throats.
Turkey obviously left the team, went off script and is busy taking care of its own interests. Those interests always included a stable Syria (regardless of who was running it) on its southern border. Their current incursion looked like a land-grab to me at first, but I’m not so sure anymore. Could be more of an attempt to 1) make the Kurds (and their US backers) matter even less than they do now, and 2) better seal Turkey’s borders from fleeing non-Turk-friendly Saudi-Wahhabi head-choppers. If that’s the real motivations, then Turkey will avoid fighting with the SAA and eventually withdraw from Syria as claimed. I guess we’ll see on that one.
This makes the US/UK/French/KSA attempt to represent the ‘will of the Syrian people’ and write their constitution for them even more laughable. Didn’t they get the memo that their side lost? How embarrassing! See – that’s the problem when you censor the news. You’re not aware of these things.

That’s what happen when you have the advantage and instead of pressing it to secure a victory, you abandon the battlefield to engage in diplomacy trying to prove points when there is nothing to prove.
Syria’s war was never Russia’s war and will never be. The Russians helped the Syrian government when it became clear that Damascus could fall. Now that disaster is not looming anymore, the Syrians have to fight their war themselves with aid from Iran and Hezbollah. Logic, no? What did you expect, the Russians to fight an open war with NATO, the US, Israel and Saudi Arabia for some peanuts as Syria? Russians have good memory for history, they well remember Afghanistan and Vietnam, lessons that the US has forgotten already a long time ago.
The only political system that would guarantee Syria’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity is a presidential republic like in Egypt, France and Russia. Political party rule is the recipe for a weak, incapacitated, inefficient and easily foreign manipulated government.
Calm down, guys. There’s no morality in terms of international polities at all, what matters is to make sure, these countries can realize some sort of long-term solution to achieve their own benefits.
Under the pretext of establishing a federal constituion they try to deprive damascus from power – a truly genius maneuver. If you can’t defeat an enemy, so divide him up in as many parts as possible, then destroy him.
