On October 23rd, the first Orion UAV that was delivered to the Russian Armed Forces was showcased in a video.
This and much more were described and shown in the program “Smotr” of the Russian NTV channel, which clearly demonstrates the capabilities of the drone.
In particular, the UAV’s arsenal now has inexpensive small-sized weapons developed on the basis of standard warheads of the Grad MLRS.
These are guided aerial bombs weighing 20 and 50 kilograms with a folding wing, which allows them to glide exactly to the target.
The arsenal also includes KAB-20 corrected aerial bombs and small-sized missiles.
Orion is equipped with three suspension points – two under the wing consoles and one under the fuselage.
The maximum weight of the payload is 200 kilograms.
It is noteworthy that initially the UAV was created as a reconnaissance aircraft, but now its capabilities have been significantly expanded.
Earlier it was reported that the drone can be in the air for a day, moving at an average speed of 200 kilometers per hour. However, due to the aerodynamic qualities close to the airframe, under certain conditions the flight time may turn out to be even longer.
The UAV control center includes the commander’s position, drone control operator stations and payload control operator stations.
Everything was initially designed so that there was no need to use professional pilots.
Takeoff and landing are also carried out automatically, the operators make sure that there is no emergency, and, if necessary, can stop takeoff or give the command to go around on landing.
It is noteworthy that the landing system has three levels.
The first is satellite navigation, the so-called “peaceful” method. But in wartime, satellites can be disabled, disabled, or drowned out.
In this case, there is a second system – radar. For Orion, a special two-band landing radar has been developed, which has already been repeatedly used in practice in extreme conditions – the UAV was tested in Syria.
The third landing system is laser, in case there is a powerful jamming for the locator.
The Russian Ministry of Defense signed an act of acceptance of the first Orion UAV in April 2020.

The US is already unreachable. Their 5th Generation Jets flying since nearly 30 years and they have already testing their 6th generation Jets. Dont be silly. US only 5th generation aircraft is no longer in production and less than half is now operational, leaving them with less than 100 5th gen planes. F35 has way too many problems and is not even a real 5th gen plane. It has nor range, no speed and no agility. it would be shot down by MIG21 anytime. US is good in drones, but drones are not that much usefull against real enemies such as Russia or China. Drones are mainly good against weak countries. And nope US is not testing sixth gen plane, that is just part of their propaganda. There has not been a first flight of any 6th gen prototype. They did not even finish developing the F35.

The F35 is a lemon and would have trouble fighting planes from the 1960s. Its purpose was to make its manufactures rich and it accomplished that mission perfectly
U.S. only has one 5th gen jet that was designed in the 80s. The Flop-35 is only a 4.5gen jet since it lack supercruise, supermaneuverability, and long range BVR missiles.
Most of the Chinese tech is Russian or based on Russian designes. Its enough to look at their subs, they are Delta III class copies. China is 20 years behind Russia in military tech.
Well done. Russia is relatively a newcomer as long as UAVs are concerned, but I’m sure they quickly catch up and even surpass some of the leading countries in this field. Almost all of the aviation and aerodynamics knowledge, material, comms and electronics are already there, just in some cases need to be miniaturized. The only parts which I think they need to focus and currently lack, is a range of small aircraft piston engines (they already have small jet engines suitable for larger UAVs) and a good, reliable overall controlling software. Even the country had experience with overall software from 40 years ago, where the first and only Buran flight all the way to landing was done full automatically/remotely.
Not really. They are new to long duration heavy drones. But Russia was the first to employ supersonic drones already in the 60s.
Are you talking about Yastreb? Well, Americans also had D-21, with somehow better capabilities than Yastreb. But none of those were practical, too expensive, only able to fly on a pre-defined path and not reusable, releasing the camera/film canisters in air and then self destruct (Soviets did some work for a landing version, but it never went into production). The reason we don’t see any trace of them in modern drones. The UAV today is very different with those days. Our Karrar UAV is actually based on an old American target drone, but the fuselage shape is the only similarity between the two.
The D21 was a failure it only had 4 missions with 38 built in total. Meanwhile Russia had the Tu-123, Tu-141, Tu-142 and the Tu-143, the Tu-143 being the successful. It was maneuverable with telemetry same as a drone today.

There is only one drone that’s matter: Burevestnik / KY30 / SSC-X-9 Skyfall, all the others are toys for conflicts between powers of a lower degree, or for guerrilla/counter guerrilla warfare.

These drones will continue to get larger and carry heavier weapons to the point where pilots will no longer be needed for airstrikes.
Boeing remote controlled their test planes in the desert decades ago, crashing some for safety tests, so with modern satellite and communication systems it won’t be too long before we see drones the size of Jumbos, or the refitting of existing planes.
