Two Chinese United Nations peacekeepers were killed in the South Sudan capital of Juba. According to state media reports, both of them were aboard an armored vehicle that was hit by a shell as it carried UN troops to a refugee camp.

One infantryman died on the spot and six others were wounded. One of the injured died from his wounds a few hours later, the state broadcaster China Central Television reported.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening local time. At that time, the government forces of South Sudan and the rebels began to shell each other in Juba.

“The Chinese military is deeply shocked by and strongly condemns the attack,” the Information Office of the MND said, adding condolences to the victims and their family members.

The Chinese peacekeeping detachment to the country has done its best to save the wounded and further strengthened its safety and guard measures to ensure security, and an emergency-response mechanism was immediately initiated by the Chinese military after the occurrence of the incident.
