Vladimir Putin Oversees Naval Drills, Including Tests of Kinzhal Hypersonic and Kalibr Cruise Missiles (Videos)

On January 9^th, the Russian Black Sea Fleet and Northern Fleets conducted a joint military exercise, which included test fire of Kalibr cruise missiles and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles.

The exercises involved more than 30 ships, a submarine of the Black Sea Fleet and more than 40 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was in attendance to oversee the drill from aboard the Marshal Ustinov missile cruiser.

“The Navy always has been a key component of national defense,” Putin said. “We will maintain and strengthen our nation’s status as a key naval power.”

The Russian leader also took part in a meeting with military officials in Sevastopol in Crimea.

As part of the Black Sea drills, MiG-31 fighter jets launched Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at practice land targets. Navy ships performed several launches of Kalibr cruise missiles and other weapons.

Nikolai Evmenov, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy reported that all points on the exercise agenda were carried out successfully.

From the Black Sea Fleet, the frigates Admiral Grigorovich and Admiral Makarov, as well as the small missile ships and missile boats Orekhovo-Zuevo, Naberezhnye Chelny, Ivanovets, in addition to the large landing ships Caesar Kunikov and Azov took part in in the drills, the patrol ships Dmitry Rogachev and Vasily Bykov, the Kolpino attack submarine, were joined by small anti-submarine ships and sea minesweepers were also part of the maneuvers.

From the Northern Fleet – the missile cruiser Marshal Ustinov, on board of which was deployed a campaign headquarters, where Putin, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Evmenov were. The exercise also involved the Vice-Admiral Kulakov destroyer.

As previously mentioned, MiG-31 fighter jets launched Kinzhal hypersonic missiles at a target at a firing range.

The crews of the frigate Admiral Grigorovich, the small missile ship Orekhovo-Zuevo and the submarine Kolpino launched Kalibr cruise missiles at surface and underwater targets.

The crews of missile boats of the Black Sea Fleet Ivanovets and Naberezhnye Chelny fired Moskit anti-ship missiles.

The Object 100 Utes coastal missile complex of the Black Sea Fleet carried out two successful launches on targets simulating conventional enemy ships.

The training was attended by crews of Su-30SM multipurpose fighters, Su-24M front-line bombers and Tu-95 strategic bombers. Unmanned aerial vehicles provided continuous visual observation of the exercises.
