On February 27, the Ukrainian military began mass use of phosphorus-filled ammunition in Kiev’s suburbs near the Gostomel airfield. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Ukrainian forces are using phosphorus-filled 122 mm shells for D-30 howitzers and phosphorus-filled rockets for BM-21 Grad launchers. These munitions are banned under the third protocol of the 1980 UN Convention on Inhumane Weapons.

New assault units of the nationalist organization Right Sector arrived in Mariupol from the Lvov Region. They deployed armored vehicles and artillery in residential areas of the city, using the local population as “human shields”. Civilian cars are being shot at in the city. There are reports of dozens of civilians killed by nationalists.

AFU cargo helicopters are sending reinforcements to the city:

In Severodonetsk, a city in the Lugansk region, volunteer nationalist units from Western Ukraine, acting as barrier units, are trying to stop retreating AFU units under threat of being shot by their commanders. On February 27, they shot four AFU officers attempting to lead their soldiers out of the line of fire.

These measures do not stop the retreat of the AFU units. There are periodic exchanges of fire between units of nationalist battalions and Ukrainian AFU units.

The village of Bugas, located 2 kilometres from the key position of Ukrainian units in Donbas, the village of Volnovakha, is now liberated by DPR units. On the evening of February 27, an assault directly on Volnovakha began. The results of the assault as of 2 a.m. local time on February 28 are not known. The settlement remains under Ukrainian control.

DPR units advanced 6 km more from northeast to southwest in the direction of Mariupol, and the settlements of Nizhnee, Granitnoye, and Gnutovo were liberated, the Russian Defense Ministry said. In an attempt to stop DPR forces in this direction, Ukrainian units struck the urban settlement of Sartana, which is closer to Mariupol, with Grads.

In the direction of the Russian military offensive (Crimean grouping) from the west and northwest to the east and southeast along the northern coast of the Sea of Azov, the large settlement of Berdyansk was liberated in the afternoon of February 27. On the evening of February 27, Russian units approached the village of Mangush, 10 kilometers west of Mariupol.

Local residents are forced to clean the roads, which were mined by retreating Ukrainian units:

On the night of February 28, reports were received from local residents that street battles were taking place in Mariupol. Thus, in Kirov Square, there was a clash between police and an unidentified military unit. There is also fighting near the city center, near 96 Metallurgov Street.

There is street fighting in Kharkov. Russian units are facing strong resistance. Russia continues to refuse to use aviation and artillery on residential areas. For their part, locals report the use of artillery on residential areas by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

On February 27, one of the advance groups of the Russian Armed Forces in Kharkiv, which had advanced into the city on light military vehicles, was destroyed. At least one serviceman of the Russian Armed Forces was taken captive. The Russian command’s incomprehensible actions continue in the Kharkiv direction, which are successfully exploited by the defending Ukrainian units. It is premature to speak of the capture of the city or even of partial control by Russia. As of February 28, the defense of the Kharkiv area is an example of the most successful actions of the AFU against the Russian Defense Ministry.

Neither Sumy, nor Kherson, nor Berdyansk, nor any of the other major cities that are blockaded or partially liberated have yet been mopped up, and it is unlikely that their mopping will begin today or tomorrow. There are no enough forces on the Russian side.

Zaporizhzhya is not yet blockaded – the Russian forces attempting to encircle the AFU grouping in Donetsk have left the city behind their left flank.

Operational battles are taking place near Kiev. No deep breakthroughs by Russian troops have been observed. Meanwhile, they are making some progress on the ground, apparently in order to prepare a further offensive to blockade Kiev from the west. As of the night of February 28, the city was blockaded only from the northwest. Large columns of Russian military vehicles, consisting of more than 100 units, were observed within a 5-kilometer radius of the city.

Forward Russian units are gradually approaching the city from the east, but they still have a dozen of kilometers to go before the city limits. The situation in the city is worsening, with gangs of looters and criminals on the loose, who received weapons handed to them by order of Ukrainian President Zelensky.

Near Nikolaev, the situation has not changed significantly.

A very alarming situation is developing in Odessa. Units of the AFU and nationalist units deployed in the city have begun harassing the city’s residents, fearing pro-Russian sentiment. Armed natives of Syria and Albania have appeared in the city, standing on the side of Kiev. Amid rumors circulating about a Russian landing force and introduced curfew, shooting began without warning at civilian vehicles traveling through the city at night.

In general, it should be noted that the advance of Russian forces has slowed down, but there are still continuous operational successes in a number of areas. The AFU suffers heavy losses and is forced to retreat, leaving “fortress garrisons” in the hope that they can contain the large Russian forces and extinguish the pace of advance.

According to sources in the Russian Defense Ministry, during the first four days of fighting, the Russian army lost a total of 270-300 fighters, including servicemen of the Russian Defense Ministry, the Rosgvardiya and the Interior Ministry, as well as losses of servicemen of the LDPR (most of the LDPR soldiers are also Russian citizens).

At the same time, the source noted that given the scale of the operation, which included four fronts and the involvement of all branches of troops, which Russia had never done before on such a scale, the losses were even less than could have been expected.

The source does not undertake to estimate losses on the Ukrainian side, suggesting that they are several times higher.

Ukrainian soldiers force a wounded Russian serviceman to shout “Glory to Ukraine!” on pain of execution. Despite the threats, he shouted “Glory to Russia, Glory to Ukraine!”

The situation in the international arena is rapidly escalating. The head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrel said that the EU will supply combat aircraft to Ukraine. Most likely, it means the supply of Soviet aircraft from the countries of the former Warsaw Pact. The delivery of thousands of weapons and the blocking of a large part of the Russian banking system were also announced. It is planned to impose restrictions and seizures on the assets of the Russian Central Bank.

Turkey has officially closed the Bosporus and the Dardanelles to Russian and Ukrainian warships.

In its turn, China announced about holding of naval exercises in the South China Sea from February 27 to March 1. Earlier, PRC officials said that “the time for Taiwan to return home” is approaching.

In the second half of February 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov to put the Russian army’s deterrence forces on special alert. According to him, high-ranking Western officials “make aggressive statements” about Russia.

Hypothesis: The apparently nonsensical decision making on the Kharkiv front is designed to maintain pressure on the garrison without prompting a withdrawral from the Lugansk front. When looking at the earlier posted map it’s clear that the only major roads to the Lugansk front run through Kharkiv and, as has been mentioned previously, the most experienced UAF forces are on the eastern front so it makes sense to try to keep them there, out of play, for as long as possible. This would also explain why, according to the map, no move appears to have been made to control the Dnipro-Donetsk road either.

I find it increadibly hard to believe that things can be as they appear at first glance, even if the garrison were that strong, any competent tactician would have moved to surround them and airdropped leaflets detailing Humanitarian Corridors (per Syria), since there appears to be no sign of this, I can only conclude the Russian command wants the UAF in control of Kharkiv for some reason or another.

They could have made a deal to protect the civilians from looters etc. Letting the army do the policing basically. It would be a smart move for everyone.

This interview explain very well the russian strategy:

https://www.mk.ru/politics/2022/02/27/general-buzhinskiy-obyasnil-chto- sderzhivaet-rossiyskie-voyska-na-ukraine.html

Russia is seeking to isolate and encircle big cities, avoiding heavy strikes on civil population.

Oh wow. Trying to encircle, besiege and starve the ukrainian cities. Great ! Starving the ukrainian civilian population to death. Exactly like the communists did in the past with the ukrainians in Holodomor. This is great strategy Mr. Putin. It will give perfect propaganda to the west, and will remind every single Ukrainian why the so-called NAZI-forces hate communists, and why the ukrainian forefathers aligned themselves with the Wehrmacht against the judeo-bolschewic communist massmurders and mass-starvers. So that this war will become more cruelful and brutal than even Iraq-war and Chechnya war all-together. Bravo !

Jimmy

Are those like… confirmed reports of them using white phosphorus rounds? Not because I don’t put it past them (or anyone really I guess), but because that just seems like there should have been an immediate summons by a UN court, and more of a news story on that.

Whatsmolly

Lol ya mate that never happens, also the specific use of white phosphorus as a fire starter is illegal, and obviously one can debate what the purpose was.

James

It’s a shame Russia hasn’t invest more in drone warfare as this could be used to harrass the enemy and reduce losses of it’s own. The enemy is fighting dirty so they have to fight dirty too unfortunately.

someone

They have invested a lot in drones but more so reconnaissance drones (to guide artillery strikes) than combat drones, although the Russian equivalent of the Turkish Bayraktar (but better), the Orion, has entered serial production and is probably being used in the current conflict.

Are the videos of TB2 strikes on Russian columns real? They seem very low quality to me but even so the optronics being used are clearly different from those used on Turkish TB2s.

Corrupt Shithole of Ukropisstan

Call of duty video games.

conny_nice

Splitter/Fragmentation ammunition together with white phosphorsous liquid, put into TB2 bayraktar drones, might indeed be a very effective weapon against strong russian columns. White phosphorous large bombs might have an especially strong effect on armoured column of russian tanks and rocket lauchners. By law of war, maybe the use is not ok, but anyway, the invasion of Ukraine too is a violation of law of war. So in the end, as both sides seem to not care for that, every side will use the best things in their arsenal to make use of it as effective as possible.

Earthrise

This is how I explain it to people. The Nuremberg Principles are sacrosanct; whoever initiates aggressive war is responsible for all the evils that come after. Both the West and Russia are responsible for the destruction of innocents to come.

Why us they ask? I tell them this story. I had a beautiful German Shepherd x Rottweiler, great dog. She hated getting bathed though. One day she saw me getting the hose and ran and hid under the BBQ. I reached in to grab her, and she nipped me. Normally I would put a dog down that bit it’s master. But this was my fault, I pushed her into a corner, and afraid she gave me a warning. I was responsible.

Russia nipped us in 2014/15, and we took no notice. We kept coming after them when they had nowhere else to go. Now finally the bear has charged out of it’s lair, and we could expect nothing less. Russia is attacking her neighbour, justifiably I’d say, but Russia is still responsible for the carnage to come. And so are we, probably more so.

Guy Metdrapedes

You shoot a dog that nips at you? What a fag.

Earthrise

A dog that bites the hand of it’s master is not a dog. Of course you would simp for the mutt until it tore your throat out. Maybe you’ll grow up to be a man someday.

Manu

So you admit you’re responsible. I have no idea why Russia is also reponsible when you already established you were. Yes not warring against the republics was the thing to do. The West and the complicity of those of you who facilitated and allowed their aggression is what Nuremberg principles denounce.

Earthrise

Manu, because the real world isn’t black and white, and adults can hold two true but conflicting truths in their hands at the same time. Just because Russia is justified in their actions doesn’t mean they are not responsible for the consequences.

Alex

Of all fronts Kharkov is the least important, so why don’t RuA just stop with this futile attacks, recon missions or whatever they are, regroup and encircle it. Or just bypass it, plus entrench positions nearby in case of counterattack. First rule of Blitzkrieg/Armoured assault – bypass heavily defended areas, leave them for second echalon and move on.

emanuel fernandez

It is very sad how my beloved Russia insists on wanting to please the West to the point of sacrificing its own soldiers, sons of mother Russia, leaving them without air cover and artillery in the cities behind enemy lines, at the mercy of the Ukrainian nationalist puppets in order to avoid local civilian casualties, civilians who are still being massacred by Ukrainian psychopaths and then unfairly blame Russia for being responsible for these civilian deaths with the unconditional support of the West, their own evil and lying sponsors, no matter what Say my beloved Russia to defend itself naming the real culprits.

Last edited 2 years ago by emanuel fernandez
James

Russia had to rebuild unfortunately, so they had to placate the West as long as practical. Now we see the Bear come out and it’s going to leave the West feeling very sour.

emanuel fernandez

Totally agree with you

Manu

I doubt it cares about the West. But it probably cares what East Ukrainians think of the troops. The message has to be clear “we’re after the Nazis and their nato masters”. If you barely see any Russian soldier or explosion by the time Zelensky is out, you can only think well of your Russian brothers.

Lesco Brandon

What is Russia’s game plan here? I am surprised we’re not seeing more videos of Russian victories. Most of videos on social media, not surprisingly, are of Russian losses. I say not surprisingly because it’s not like MSM will cover any positive Russian news.

I think at the moment all Russia can hope for is a quick encirclement of Kiev and collapse of this pocket. If I was in charge of the Russian Army I would be pumping troops and equipment to do this as fast as possible

No more jew world order

youtube and facubook are filtering out all Russian victories, Mariupol and Kharkiv are as good as fallen and kiev is encicled Ukraine is SLAPPAD

James

That reminds me, there is noticeably more censoring of pro-russia comments on Youtube. On some MSM news channels I can’t get a single comment in without it being deleted with 30 seconds. And same with similar comments from other people. Just because we can’t see it, doesn’t mean the support for Russia and common sense isn’t there.

Christopher

Only some. A lot of people tend to ‘project’ their anger, hence to neo-nazism in present-day Ukraine. They are poor, without prospects, and looking for some meaning and a way to express their frustration.

Manu

Surely they do understand. It’s just that the Nazis have plenty US/EU guns/funds and it’s sometimes easier to bow down than to fight. Like Mexico also accepted US rule and adapted to it for decades before AMLO.

Ukrainians fought against the US puppets in 2014 and lost. Now Russia is helping get rid of Nazis and Ukrainians are so far not getting in the way much.

I believe that Russia is losing the war, a very serious and dangerous thing for all of Humanity. That is why it seems essential and urgent to me that it modify its original strategy of conquering all of Ukraine and focus all its energy on conquering the East of the country, along the Sumy-Kharkov-Dnipro-Kherson axis. Establish the fortified border on the eastern bank of the Dnieper and declare the resulting country New Russia. Meanwhile blocking the lines from Kiev with artillery, aerial fire, sabotage and, if necessary, mining or blowing up bridges on the Dnieper River.

That, in the current circumstances, would be a great victory for Russia, (it would share sovereignty over the Great River) and also for China and the free peoples, indirectly.

By the way, Russia should secretly ask China for help in military equipment, especially smart ammunition and drones.

Ok but either act as a spectator, because we all know shit compared to the people you’d like to “advise”, or cheer on. Claiming that Russia is losing when it’s clearly not, is doing the game of NATO. So from here, either you watch too much imperialist propaganda or you’re its agent. Either case, please refrain, regardless of your anti-imperialist credentials.

Martin Rapavý

Russia can still turn this into a major victory for the people of Ukraine at the negotiating table. The first and foremost condition should be the federalization of Ukraine with great devolution of power to the regions. That and only that would bring more democracy to Ukraine and would prevent it from enacting such Russophobic policies in the future.

Hi from the UK,

I think it would be good if someone, with better web skills than me, could juxtapose images/video from the first few days of Russia’s attack (operation, incursion – whatever people call it) with those from the cruelly euphemistically named ‘Operation Iraqi Freedom’. Off memory, I remember massive scenes of carnage in Iraq within days of the start; whereas with this current situation, the media in my country (the b-sh’tting BBC) are struggling to find images and keep repeatedly showing one or two apartment buildings that have been damaged. I suspect this is going slower as there is not so much indiscriminate targeting going on with the current situation as with the NATO so-called ‘peace’ operation in Iraq (in both the 1990s and 2000s) where civillian infrastructure such as water treatment and food storage facilities were bombed almost immediately.

I try to tell friends that will listen to consider such comparisons and ask them where their moral outrage was during Iraq (both times), Libya, Yugoslavia etc. I can only describe it as ‘media induced morality’. I still scratch my head over the fact that even a lot of intelligent people in my country (who are genuinely good people) do not get the big picture. Probably due to the fact that the MSM in my country have long neen in the habit of providing news without context of any kind. Sorry, there is context, if you can call their reports on whoever is being called the new Hitler’s reasons for carrying out whatever action they are doing. They are normally portrayed as some kind of loose-cannon-style James Bond villain. It would be funny if not for the tragic results of such deliberate misidentification.

I am against wars of all kinds, but I am not stupid as to why this is currently happening. I understand the anger of many Russians towards my country but would argue that the majority opniion in my nation would be different if we actually had an honest media. The media in my country nowadays is like the crazy bizzaro world sh’t they have in the US…just a little slicker.

Anyway, I hope this ends soon for all involved.

Erik

Beating & shooting above Indian students heads at the border, scaring them to go back into Ukraine because Indian Gov’t didn’t help the Ukrainians doesn’t help the situation too! 🤬

Terry

That’s not the reason they are doing this my friend. They are treating Indian (and African) students in such a terrible way because they are f’cking racist dogs. It’s happening on Ukraine’s border with Poland. Guess what? The BBC are trying to play it down. It seems that it is ok to be intolerent and racist if you are with the ‘good guys’!

Joe

Russia army is to soft and this will not be good for Russia military, but also civilians. Russia should use hard hammer tactics. Hard and quick. The Ukrainian military will kill civilians and destroy civilians infrastructure and blame Russia anyway. Hitting Ukrainian military hard will safe Russia army reputation and will finish the conflict quick. Dragging this wars and be soft will make things worst.

Martin Rapavý

The reports of hard battles in the cities seem to be grossly exaggerated for now: the cities appear to be fairly quiet and there seems to be no military necessity to enter densely populated areas.
