Almost all front lines in Eastern and Southern Ukraine are marked by heavy positional battles. Neither of the warring sides can confirm new gains on the battlefields.
The threat of the Ukrainian counteroffensive remains in the Kharkiv region. In recent days, Ukrainian forces have made several attempts to attack near Udy and Borshchevaya, but have not achieved any victories.
In the Slavyansk region, the Ukrainian military announced the liberation of Ozernoe, located near Krasny Liman. The Ukraine Special Military Operation front is about 500 miles (800 Km.) Neither side has demonstrated marine landing capabilities. Consequently, from Nova Khakhovka to Palvni the southern shore of the Dnipro acts as a defensive line of about 140 miles (224 Km) since it is seldom narrower than 3 km. This still leaves 360 miles (576 Km) of military front separating the forces.
Currently, that is about 400 Russian troops per mile (250 per Km.) In World War I the front from the North Sea to the Alps was 440 miles (700 Km). Germany fielded 192 divisions (approximately) at an average of about 15,000 per division. That is about 6,500 German troops per mile (over 4,000 per Km) which is sixteen times as many men per unit distance. This figure was duplicated on the other side of the front by the French and English.
So this Special Military Operation is not a really set up to be a static trench war, there are just not enough men to deploy. As a result, there will always be weak sectors that a disciplined army can break through. In that sense, the war is more similar to the Napoleonic Wars of the early nineteenth century.
