Just days after we reported that Tesla could be on the verge of a formal investigation by the NHTSA, a father and his two kids in Moscow both suffered serious injuries after their Tesla Model S on Autopilot slammed into a tow truck before bursting into flames, according to RT.
Shocking video footage from a vehicle passing the accident in the opposing lane captures the moment that the Tesla explodes, going up in flames and “shocking oncoming drivers”.

This video, around the 2 minute mark, shows a driver passing what can only be described as the smoldering wreckage of the Tesla after the finally was finally under control.
The accident took place on Moscow’s Ring Road on Saturday evening and initial reports are blaming the car’s Autopilot system for failing to recognize a stopped tow truck that was attending to a vehicle on the road.
Both the driver and his children were rushed to the hospital before the Tesla caught fire. The driver suffered a concussion and a leg fracture and the children suffered cervical spine and chest injuries.
Video of the initial incident shows the Tesla, in the left hand lane, failing to move over for a stopped tow truck and driving directly into the stopped vehicle.

With more Teslas on the road now than ever, it feels as though the “watershed” moment that’ll prompt the NHTSA to take serious and swift action against the company, in order to protect drivers, might not be that far away.
I don’t care what some charismatic billionaire says; I don’t trust a machine to drive for me.
But if you are on long route and you get asleep during driving so at least there should be some autopilot system in the vehicle to take control of the vehicle and save the significant lives inside the vehicle.
Most road accidents happened at night time when the driver get asleep and lose control on the vehicle on long journey. So either the vehicle fill in the deep valley or struck with the opposit coming vehicle.
Second if the driver has not enough training or has some mental issues so then autopilot avoids accidents on the roads.
So in brief electric cars and autopilot are our future. It will be a standard in every single car and government will not allow any car without autopilot on the roads.
Does anyone less Google averse than I am know if Tesla uses the new RF1234yf refrigerant? I’ve heard that stuff is crazy flammable.
Permanent magnet motors for vehicle’s driving are better options instead of traditional electric motors with larger batteries.
Russia should be the first country to ban Tesla’s from it’s roads in the interests of Russia’s public safety and security.
More proof if needed that artificial intelligence is not ‘well educated’ for the real world, and that US artificial intelligence is as Smart as all too many Americans are these days.

I suppose the Tesla/US inquiry will determine that it was a white Russian scientist who was personally ordered by President Putin to cause the explosion, and that Russia is now a further threat to US interests. :)

Any autopiloted vehicle should never collide with any thing if the software and hardware sensers work properly.
Correct. “Should” and “IF” are the key words though. As a mechanic I have seen lots of sensors fail. I have seen sensors that sense sensor failure fail. I have seen sensors get dirty and provide false readings. Not to mention software bugs and computer freezes. The list goes on and on. Now multiply that times the number of cars on the road. And that doesn’t even take into account the mischief/mayhem that might be caused by, say, disgruntled persons, which would not be possible with traditional vehicles. But back to the point. Look at how few Teslas and other self driving vehicles are on the road today and there have already been plenty of incidents. Relatively that is. The above article included. As a side note, take a look at the 737Max which crashed twice due to sensor failure and software issues. And sadly they crashed despite the best efforts of the pilots to regain control from the automated systems.
This is life humen learn from its failures. Are you agree or not but in reality step by step vehicles are becoming self controlled.
Think about a car that could fly like a fighter jet with a speed 10,000 miles per hour. Is it possible for human to control it.
Human can also become sick or could become sleepy during driving and accident could happen. Therefore, nothing is hundred percent fault free. Am I right? Even well trained drivers do accidents.
I think you have lost track of the discussion. We all know what is. The discussion was that self driving cars will not make it any safer, over all.
AI needs to mature for some more years. But the immediate need for profit is what pushes it immediately on the road. Even so, there are a lot of parties vested in taking advantage of every weakness in AI
There is no such thing as “AI”. It is a misnomer. Your toaster pops the bread out when it is toasted. Is that AI? Sensors, programs and algorithm. Nothing more. And all subject to sensor malfunction, programmer errors and more importantly, when it comes to reliance on “AI” for logical discernment, programmer biases. Just sayin.

I would have thought that for an automated transit system, avoiding obstacles was a very basic function. Shall we soon find that this obvious flaw also extents to obstacles in densely populated urban areas?
In the Moscow accident, judging by the injuries, noone was wearing a seat belt, although the car was on autopilot. It seems a bit reckless. Perhaps these vehicles are in the wrong hands?
