The Iranian military is ready to fight a war for “Israel’s disappearance”, Iran’s air force chief said on January 21.
“The young people in the air force are fully ready and impatient to confront the Zionist regime and eliminate it from the Earth,” Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh was quoted as saying by the Young Journalist Club, a website supervised by state television.
The remarks came following a massive Israeli strike on alleged Iranian targets in Syria.
Israel insists that a main part of Israeli strikes on Syria was carried out in response to an Iranian missile fired at the occupied Golan Heights by Iranian forces from the area of Damascus.
“The Iranian [rocket] launch took place after very lengthy preparations and a decision-making process that concluded months ago,” IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Ronen Manelis said.
He said that the rocket was launched “by an Iranian force from the Damascus area, from inside territory that [the Syrian government] promised would not host an Iranian presence.”
Speaking at the inauguration of a new international airport in southern Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel’s air force had “delivered powerful blows to Iranian targets in Syria, after Iran fired a rocket from that area toward our territory.”
“Anyone who tries to hurt us, we will hurt them,” he noted.
Regional political experts, including Israeli ones, point out that Netanyahu is attempting to exploit the “Iranian threat” to gain an upper hand in the upcoming elections to the Israeli Parliament, which are set to take place in April 2019.
Translation from a Russian news report: Why was the new S300 system not used to defend Syria?
Many people around the World are puzzled why the Syrians did not use the new S300 system to shoot down all the Israli planes and armed drones used in the recent attacks.
Firstly, and a point not recognised by many, is that the S300 has not been fully handed over to Syria yet – Russian personnel are still at this time in side them, in control of them, training the Syrians.
This is very important to recognise because according to a senior officer, both Russia and the US have an informal (ie unsigned but honour bound between warfighters) agreement not to directly interfere with Israeli / Iranian actions in and around Syria.
Apparently, the Iranian / Israeli conflict will be viewed as being distinct from the Syria / ISIS conflict – unless either Russian or US interests are directly threatened. Beyond supply of hardware, intel sharing, etc to existing partners (US+Israel and Russia+Syria), no other intervention will take place.
This is why Russia did not knock any of the Israeli planes and armed drones out of the sky with S300 or S400, or even send up any fighters to simply ‘escort’ the Israelis away.
Because the Russian warfighters honour the agreement the US warfighters honour thiers – even though thier masters argue they shoud not. This is also why there is currently no big fat US carrier group off the coast of Syria.
Only the less capable (but still aprraently very effective) Syrian air defence systems are currently available to use, ie Pantsirs, S200’s, etc.
Had the Syrians (Russians) used S300 it would have been (Rightly) interpreted as the Russians engaging Israel, not the Syrians. As well as having broken the non-intervention aggreement with the US the use of S300 would have left the door wide open for a much wider conflict (again), re-involving Russia and the US directly facing off, with Israel, Iran, and Syria in the middle.
The Syrians therefore will continue to have one hand tied behind thier backs until all the S300 training is complete (and the Russians decide to hand them over).
This means that until the Syrian S300 system can stand alone from the Russians it is likely that Israel will take advantage of this period to continue to attack Iranian targets inside Syria.

Syrian air defense are not qualified to use S-300!..we have seen another Pantsir destroyed because was parked without camouflage or in movement to avoid GPS guide of IDF missile!..during NATO attacks vs Serbia..they only were manage to destroy one AD system because there were many fake models deployed and most of them were hidden or camouflaged!
Kremlin has had since 2010 to qualify SAD. Nobody can say there has not been any situations where S-300 were obvious to use, and Assad has not been silent about his need for them.

Agreed. If Iran is like other countries, they have military officers of mixed quality and I bet their air force commander is not an elite position. Their best commanders would be in their missile forces, ground units, and even the IRGC Navy units.
The IRGC navy units don’t have fancy equipment, or a blue water navy but they look like they are very well trained coastal units and for the shallow water of the Persian Gulf. It takes skill to operate speed boats and mini-subs correctly. They must have studied that naval battle in the late 80’s a lot and if we in the U.S. got into another scrap with them in the Persian Gulf we might be in for a surprise.
The trouble with military people is that they are full of bravado. Their hot-air should be ignored. It has no place in public debate or international diplomacy.
