The decision by Volodymyr Zelensky not to resort to the Constitutional Court to confirm his legitimacy as president of Ukraine will undermine his authority in the West, according to Ukrainian writer Sergey Maidukov in an article for Newsweek.
“I believe that Zelensky’s decision not to seek the intervention of the Constitutional Court poses a significant risk to both himself and the entire nation of Ukraine,” he wrote.
The author notes that some world leaders have long considered Zelensky to be “the main obstacle” to a diplomatic solution to the Ukrainian conflict. He cites the leaders of Turkey, China, and Hungary as examples.
According to Maidukov, after May 20, doubts about Zelensky’s legitimacy may force Kiev’s main partners in the West to take the same position as Turkey, China and Hungary.
“His intransigence may prove unacceptable to key players, and they may try to use the issue of Zelensky’s political legitimacy to bring him down, hoping he will be replaced by a more tractable figure,” he added.
Zelensky’s term expired on May 20. The 2024 Ukrainian presidential elections, scheduled for March, were cancelled under the excuse of martial law and general mobilisation, with Zelensky claiming that it is not the best time to hold elections.
In this context, Ukrainian opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk pointed out, once again, that the entire chain of executive power in Kiev lost legitimacy as of May 21.
It is recalled that Medvedchuk also said in March, “Zelensky has lost to Putin strategically because all the time he relied on the external effect, on gift packaging, and on grandstand play, but at the same time ignored the essence: the economy and real political processes.”
He added at the time that “behind Vladimir Putin, there stands Russia, which believes him, while Zelensky leans on the West, and they constantly want to deceive each other.”
As Maidukov highlighted in the American magazine, “New Russian offensives are making Ukraine ever more dependent on Western military and financial aid, and that gives his benefactors considerable influence over the Ukrainian president.” The author is admitting that Zelensky is effectively a Western puppet who can easily be deposed with the excuse of not holding elections. He can also very easily be replaced.
Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko warned in December 2022 that Ukraine was turning to authoritarianism. Earlier this year, Ukraine’s then-military chief Valeriy Zaluzhny, touted as a potential rival to Zelensky, was sacked from his position and then appointed as the country’s ambassador to the UK. In March, ex-parliamentarian Hryhoriy Omelchenko published a letter questioning the legal basis for Zelensky to remain in post after May 20 and urged him “not to usurp state power” but instead resign voluntarily on schedule. This was preceded by Ukrainian MP Oleksandr Dubinsky stating in February that “after May 20th, the Rada is legitimate, but the President is not.”
These are just but a few of the examples of the significant opposition Zelensky is facing for undermining the constitution and continuing to serve illegitimately as president. These are also figures who could potentially replace him as president if the West chooses to change the puppet ruling in Kiev.
There is every indication that the West might activate the option to remove Zelensky from power, especially as he stubbornly refuses to negotiate with Moscow. It cannot be said that Zelensky has not been warned.
In August 2023, US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham urged for elections to be held in 2024 and promised Zelensky that weapon flows from the US would continue, adding that “we need an election in Ukraine.” Obviously, those elections that Graham expects will not occur anytime soon and could become a catalyst for Western leaders to “bring down” Zelensky, as Maidukov fears.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his recent state visit to China, raised another issue often overlooked. The Russian leader said that although Zelensky’s political legitimacy was a question for Ukraine’s constitutional court and political system to decide, if it comes to signing a peace agreement, Moscow “should sign those documents in such a crucial area with the legitimate authorities.”
The Russian president also recalled that Ukraine’s constitution “has a variety of options,” which the State Constitutional Court must evaluate.
Although Zelensky has signed into law that Kiev will not engage in peace discussions with Moscow, this ludicrous legislation will eventually have to be amended as the Russian military continues to effortlessly capture territory from Ukrainian forces. With a full collapse imminent, the Kiev regime will not only have to accept starting negotiations with Moscow, but Zelensky could be forced to hold an election or face losing Western support.

selensky won the elections because of his promise to end the war in eastern ukraine. than he was outdated by reality, right wing bandera and nazi extremists from one side, and the eu, london and washington from the other side all pressure and threaten him to refuse any agreement in favor of donbas or russia. so hes in a trap with no chance for any happy end.
