WikiLeaks has released documents, confirming intervention of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the French elections in 2012. According to a press release, posted on the website, the US intelligence planted its agents and keep watch over all the main political forces.

As WikiLeaks noted, a few months before the presidential elections in France, the CIA suggested that the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), a party of the then French President Nicolas Sarkozy, would not be able to retain power. In this regard, the intelligence agency set a task to determine internal tendencies in the party, as well as personal opinions of Sarkozy himself. WikiLeaks stressed that even the fact that the president was considered a pro-American politician, did not deliver him from espionage by the US.

By the order of the CIA, other parties: the Socialist Party (PS) of Francois Hollande, the National Front (FN) of Marie Le Pen, as well as Dominique Strauss-Khan and Martine Aubry, who were considered to be possible candidates for victory in the elections, also became objects for the CIA spying. Intelligence officers were interested in the situation inside the leading French parties, their links with business elites, financing of the political parties, including from abroad.

In addition, Americans wanted to get to know attitude of the main political forces to the economic crisis in the EU, as well as a role of France in the resolution of the Greek debt.

In total, according to WikiLeaks, the CIA operation lasted for 10 months and was completed after the formation of the new French government.

Hollande and Sarkozy were leaders in the first round of the presidential elections in 2012, while Marine Le Pen took the third place. In the second round, Hollande gained victory by a margin of 3%.
