Work is underway to organize a quadripartite meeting between the foreign ministries of Russia, Turkey, Iran and Syria, Mikhail Bogdanov, Russia’s special representative for the Middle East, told Sputnik in an interview that was published on February 23.
Russia has been making efforts to restore ties between Turkey and Syria. The normalization process gained momentum last December, when the defense ministers and intelligence chiefs of the two countries met in Moscow. An agreement to involve Iran in the process was reached early on in February.
“We all have a common goal to resolve the situation around Syria and stabilize the environment in the Middle East region,” Bogdanov said.
The senior diplomat added that the current work will lay down conditions for Turkish-Syrian talks, which might pave the way for potential agreements.
Ankara cut all ties with Damascus after the outbreak of the war in Syria, more than a decade ago. Today, it is the main backer of rebels and its military occupies vast parts of the country.
Bogdanov told Sputnik that there is no reason to doubt that Turkey’s military presence in Syria is “temporary,” noting that Ankara stated its commitment to the unity and sovereignty of the country on multiple occasions.
The Turkish and Syrian foreign ministers were supposed to meet in February. However, it is unclear if this will happen as both countries are currently focused on overcoming the results of the recent earthquake, which claimed the lives of some 50,000 people.
The idea to involve Iran in the Russian-sponsored Turkish-Syrian normalization process was welcomed by all sides. Tehran is a top ally of Damascus. At the same time, it maintains strong relations with Ankara on all levels.
The upcoming quadripartite meeting may provide the boost needed to start a new chapter in the relations between Ankara and Damascus.
