The Houthis (Ansar Allah) announced on May 17 that their air defenses shot down yet another MQ-9 Reaper combat drone of the United States military over Yemen a day earlier.
The MQ-9 was intercepted while conducting “hostilities” over the central province of Ma’rib ,Brigade General Yahya Sarea, a military spokesman for the Houthis, said in a statement, noting that this was the fourth drone of this type to be shot down by the group since the start of the confrontation with the U.S. and its allies over the Israeli war on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.
“The aircraft was targeted with a locally-made surface-to-air missile and footage of the interception will be released later, God willing,” the spokesman added.
Brig. Gen. Sarea also stressed that the Houthis remain ready “on all levels, in land, sea and air,” vowing that “all enemy attempts will be foiled.”
MQ-9 combat drones, which cost upwards of $30 million per a unit, are primarily used to collect intelligence, but have the ability to conduct pinpoint strikes. The advanced drones can operate for more than 27 hours and reach altitudes of over 25,000 feet.
Videos showing the wreckage of the downed MQ-9 in Ma’rib were posted to social media. However, the Pentagon is yet to admit the loss.
This was indeed the fourth drone of this type to be shot down by the Houthis over Yemen and nearby waters since the group began to launch attacks in response to the Israeli war on Gaza last November. The first three were shot down on November 14, February 19 and April 25.
In addition to shooting down these drones, the Houthis targeted dozens of Israel-affiliated ships and others owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. The group also launched several drone and missile attacks at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat.
Since January, the U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its capabilities. However, the Houthis’ recent operations suggest that none of these objectives have been achieved so far.
