“The Kursk operation is one of the biggest victories of the entire war,” said Zelensky during his stay at Ramstein base in Germany as part of his participation in a meeting of the contact group. However, the Ukrainian president did not mention the number of personnel and military equipment of the AFU destroyed during the entire “Kursk adventure.” Once again, this primarily confirms the media significance of the event, as well as the fact that the Kiev regime does not care about the soldiers dying on the battlefields. At the same time, the main goal of stopping the advance of Russian troops on other sectors of the front has not been achieved.
Throughout 2024, the Russian Armed Forces concentrated significant forces to push the AFU out of their territory and continued to do so in 2025. Ukrainians periodically attempt to recapture previously occupied positions, but this rarely ends in success. On January 5-6, 2025, the AFU launched an offensive in the area of the Berdin settlement and overall achieved success, capturing certain territories. Ukrainians took advantage of the fact that during unfavorable weather conditions for a Russian counteroffensive and the so-called “rasputitsa,” they have control over the asphalt roads from the town of Sudzha. However, near the settlement, the AFU encountered fighters of the “Kashtan” group of the “Akhmat” special forces, and the advance was halted.
From January 7 to the present day, Russian troops have moved on to a new phase of the offensive and actively push the AFU out of previously occupied positions. Since January 7, Ukrainians have lost about 60 square kilometers of territory in the Kursk region (according to the Ukrainian Deepstate service), and Russian fighters have liberated the villages of Kruglenkoye, Novoivanovka, Alexandria, Leonidovo, and Russian Porechnoye and have advanced to the village of Pogrebki. Russian Armed Forces have approached the town of Sudzha from the southwest.
Russian units also continue their attempts to push the AFU out of sector Nikolaevka-Darino, located on the southern flank of the main attack. Fierce battles are taking place for the villages of Novaya Sorochina and Staraya Sorochina, as well as to the east of the village of Malaya Loknya and on the outskirts of the village of Viktorovka. Between the villages of Russian Porechnoye and Cherkasskoye Porechnoye, the AFU have concentrated their efforts and managed to control the settlement of Kositsa. Ukrainians are actively bringing in equipment and personnel for a counterattack, taking advantage of the fact that the asphalt road is under their control. Reserves of the AFU, located in the Sumy region, continue to be replenished by units arriving after training in European countries. Their transfer continues to be carried out to the areas of combat through the city of Sudzha on the Sudzha-Lgov route, which is under the control of the Ukrainian army.
The situation is extremely difficult for both sides. Each side has its advantages and is using them. However, the Russian army is pushing the AFU out of the Kursk region. The number of AFU forces destroyed confirms Zelensky’s intention to “fight to the last Ukrainian”.
