On May 13, at least 24 fighters of the Palestinian-led al-Quds Brigade were killed or wounded in two separate attacks by ISIS cells in central Syria.
The first attack targeted two posts of the pro-government group on a road leading to the al-Talila military camp to the east of the ancient city of Palmyra in eastern Homs. The posts were attacked by a large force of ISIS moving in seven pickup trucks, some of which were armed with heavy machine guns.
“ISIS attack did not last more than an hour, during which the group’s members were able to destroy two vehicles, one of them was armored, and seize a pickup truck equipped with a 23 mm machine gun along with weapons and light ammunition,” sources with knowledge on the attack told the New Arab.
According to the London-based outlet, seven fighters of the al-Quds Brigade were killed and at least ten others were injured in the attack. Three of the wounded are in critical condition.
The second attack, which took place around the same time as the first one, saw ISIS cells ambushing a convoy of the al-Quds Brigade in Amour Range near the town of al-Sukhnah in eastern Homs. The fighters were heading to comb the mountain range when two of their vehicles were struck with rocket-propelled grenades.
Five fighters of al-Quds Brigade were killed and two others were injured during the ambush. ISIS terrorists were able to escape.
The attacks came amid an intense bombing campaign on central Syria by the Russian Aerospace Forces. On May 13, уight Russian warplanes carried out more than 40 airstrikes on ISIS hideouts in the following areas.
- The outskirts of Palmyra and al-Sukhnah in eastern Homs;
- The outskirts of the al-Sholah, Ghabagheb and Jebel Bishri in western and northwestern Deir Ezzor;
- The outskirts of Resafa and Sufyan in southern Raqqa.
One of the Russian airstrikes which targeted the outskirts of al-Sukhnah destroyed a pickup vehicle of ISIS and killed at least two terrorists.
ISIS cells in central Syria stepped up their attacks recently. Nevertheless, the terrorists are still contained away from key urban centers and vital roads in the region.
