On May 5, the Afrin Liberation Forces (ALF) released footage of a recent attack by its cells on a position of the Turkish military in the northern countryside of Syria’s Aleppo.
The attack, which took place in the southern part of the Turkish-occupied area of Afrin on May 3, claimed the life of a Turkish officer, Lt. Talha Bahadır. The footage shared by the ALF reveals that the well-fortified position was targeted with an anti-tank guided missile.
In a statement, the ALF said that its cells carried out two other attacks on May 3. The group’s cells targeted a Turkish-backed militant near the town of al-Bab, the main stronghold of Turkish forces in the northern Aleppo countryside, and raided a Turkish military position near the town of Azaz.
The Kurdish guerilla group claimed that its three recent attacks killed four Turkish service members and wounded four others. According to the group, a Turkish-backed militant we also killed.
The ALF, which is allegedly affiliated with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), emerged in Kurdish-held areas in the northern countryside of Aleppo following the 2018 Turkish invasion and occupation of Afrin. Since then, the group has been waging an insurgency against the Turkish military and its proxies.
Between April 23 and 30, the ALF carried out several attacks on Turkish-backed militants in the northern Aleppo countryside. 14 militants were allegedly killed in the attacks.
The Turkish military and its proxies responded to the ALF’s recent attacks with a series of artillery strikes on SDF-held towns and villages in the northern countryside of Aleppo. Ankara could soon opt for a more serious response like a ground operation.
For every dead Turkish soldier they will lose 10 or 20.
