Algerian President Says Syria Should Take Part In Next Arab League Summit

On November 26, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said that Syria should return to the Arab League during the next Arab summit which will be held in Algiers upcoming March.

“Syria is supposed to be present,” the President told reporters when asked if the next Arab summit in Algeria will see Syria’s return to the Arab League.

The President stressed that the upcoming Algiers summit should be inclusive in order to help reunify the Arab world once again.

“When we organize an Arab summit, we want it to be an inclusive and a launchpad for the reunification of the fractured Arab world,” Tebboune said. “We are a country that always knits the splintered.”

Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended in 2011 following the failure of the Arab peace plan for the country. Back then, the league called on all Arab states to close their embassies in Damascus and impose sanctions on the Syrian government.

Recently, Algeria and several other Arab states, including Egypt, the UAE and Iraq, boosted their efforts to facilitate the return of Syria to the Arab League.

In October, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra told RT that Syria’s participation in the next Arab summit will be decided in prior Arab consultations. The minister expressed hope that the consultations would be positive and that Syria would participate in the summit.

According to recent reports, the only Arab country that continues to reject Syria’s return to the Arab League is Qatar, which is well-known for its massive support for the Syrian opposition. Theoretically, Doha objection should not be a big obstacle.

Syria’s return to the Arab League would be a major blow to the US and its Western allies who recently stepped up their efforts to isolate the war-torn country and delegitimize its government.
