On the morning of June 27, unidentified gunmen assassinated a fighter of the Russian-backed 5th Corps in the eastern countryside of Daraa.

According to local sources, the victim, Aghyad Mohamad al-Maf’alani, was standing by the window in his house in the town of Nahtah when he was shot dead by an unidentified gunmen.  The killer managed to escape.

Al-Maf’alani, a former rebel, joined the reconciliation process in mid-2018. Later he enlisted in the ranks of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) 5th Corps.

In the last few months, a series of attacks targeted fighters and leaders of the 5th Corps. One of the largest attacks took place on June 20. An improvised explosive device struck a bus, which transported fighters of the Russian-backed formation. Nine people were killed.

ISIS claimed responsibility for some of the attacks on 5th Corps personnel in Daraa. However, the perpetrators of many other attacks remain unknown.

Daraa’s local fighters, the SAA and security forces will have to coordinate more efficiently in order to improve security in the southern region. Russia’s assistance is important for achieving this goal.

Willing Conscience (The Truths

“ISIS claimed responsibility for some of the attacks on 5th Corps personnel in Daraa. However, the perpetrators of many other attacks remain unknown.”

Isis claimed responsibility for some of the attacks but not all of them, just a few of them, which means this attack against 32 Russian trained/supported/supplied 5th corps SAA soldiers, and many of the other attacks against 5th army corps soldiers that Isis didn’t claim responsibility for, to date have no known culprits, so who was actually responsible for this and many of the other attacks.

Russia has to realize a strong hand is needed now, they have to name and shame the guilty party and also demand and end to this nonsense, if it continues the south will erupt again and Assad will have 2 battlefronts to deal with. I’m pretty sure there have been some very large defections from the 5th army corps recently and reports they were involved in demonstrations against Iran, there were also reports that some 5th corps members have been sent to Libya as well, so who knows what’s really going on in southern Syria now.
