Another Israeli soldier was killed during fighting in the Gaza Strip on August 22, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced.
The slain soldier held the rank of Sergeant and was serving in the ranks of the 401st Armored Brigade’s 46th Battalion. According to an initial IDF probe, the soldier was killed by anti-tank rocket fire in the city of Rafah in the southern part of Gaza.
None of Gaza’s factions has so far claimed responsibility for the latest deadly attack in Rafah. However, the al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Gaza-ruling Hamas Movement, released on August 21 combat footage from the Tell al-Sultan neighborhood to the west of the city.
The footage showed Hamas fighters targeting two armored personnel carriers and a building occupied by Israeli troops with rocket-propelled grenades. It also showed recent mortar attacks on IDF gatherings in the neighborhood.
The latest death brought Israel’s toll in the ground operations against Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in Gaza and along its border to 336. Around 2,200 others have been reportedly wounded. In addition, over 500 vehicles were hit in the Strip, according to Hebrew media.
On the Palestinian side, the death toll from the Israeli war has exceeded 40,300, with women and children making up most of the casualties.
Despite destroying much of the Strip and killing tens of thousands of Palestinians, Israel does not appear to be interested in a permanent ceasefire.
