The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on June 27 that its forces conducted additional strikes against multiple targets in Iran upon orders from the Commander in Chief, President Donald Trump.
The strikes marked the second direct attack by the U.S. against Iran since the two signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war earlier this month. The first attack took place just a day earlier.
In a statement, the command blamed the Islamic Republic for an attack that targeted another ship near the Strait of Hormuz earlier in the day.
“After yesterday’s U.S. strikes in response to the Iranian attack on M/V Ever Lovely, Iran was given a chance to honor the ceasefire agreement but elected not to when its forces launched a one-way attack drone that hit M/T Kiku this morning at 4:30 a.m. ET. The Panama-flagged tanker was transiting near the Strait of Hormuz with more than two-million barrels of crude oil,” the command said.
“CENTCOM forces launched strikes today in direct response to continued Iranian aggression against commercial shipping. U.S. military aircraft targeted Iranian military surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defense sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities.” it added.
The command stressed that commercial vessel transit through the Strait of Hormuz will continue, noting that its forces remain “vigilant, lethal, and ready.”
In Iran, state broadcaster IRIB said that explosions were heard in Sirik County and later reported that several projectiles targeted a village on Qeshm Island in the south.
Following the strikes, Trump renewed his threats to Iran, saying that the U.S. could resume military operations against the Islamic Republic. This is a violation of the memorandum of understanding.
“United States aircraft just struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN! It is very possible that they will never learn! There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist! ” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The Islamic Republic is guaranteed to respond to the latest wave of U.S. strikes. However, the escalation is unlikely to lead to the collapse of the memorandum of understanding.
Iran is attempting to assert its dominance over the Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for about 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, and the U.S. is attempting to challenge this in order to prevent the Islamic Republic from imposing future tolls on the waterway.
While the memorandum of understanding bars Iran from charging tolls for the next 60 days, it leaves open the possibility that the Islamic Republic can do so afterward.
