Around ten people were killed, including two children, and five were wounded by an Israeli strike on a residential building in the town of Nabatieh city in southern Lebanon, the National News Agency reported on August 17.
The victims were all Syrian citizens, the official Lebanese news agency said, adding that a final toll of the strike would be announced after DNA tests were conducted to determine the identity of the victims.
From its side, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that the deadly strike on Nabatieh targeted a weapons depot of Hezbollah. Other airstrikes hit buildings used by the group in the towns of Hanine and Maroun al-Ras, which are also located in southern Lebanon, according to the military.
A heated exchange of fire took place across the Lebanese-Israeli on August 16, with Hezbollah launching eight rocket, missile and drone attacks against Israel and the IDF responding with a series of strikes that killed at least a fighter of the group.
The Israeli strike on Nabatieh will likely provoke a fierce response by Hezbollah, which usually steps up its attacks after such incidents.
Hezbollah and its allies in Lebanon have been launching attacks against the IDF in support of the Hamas Movement and other armed factions in the Gaza Strip since the start of the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave last October.
So far, the confrontation has resulted in 26 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Golan as well as the deaths of at least 18 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 600 people have been killed, including 392 fighters of Hezbollah and over 100 civilians.
