On April 6, a large barrage of rockets was launched from southern Lebanon at Israel’s northern region in a major escalation.
Rocket sirens were first sounded in the towns of Betzet and Shlomi in the Western Galilee close to the border with Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said one rocket was intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system. Shortly afterward, sirens continued to sound in other towns across the region.
Footage circulating online showed the launch of several rockets from southern Lebanon as well as trails of smoke from Iron Dome interceptor missiles over northern Israel.
Material losses were reported in several northern Israeli towns. The Magen David Adom rescue service also said that one man was lightly wounded by shrapnel and a woman was hurt running for a bomb shelter.
Israel media reports put the number of rockets launched from southern Lebanon between 15 and 100. Both 107 mm and 122 mm rockets were used in the attack.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Reuters reported, citing three Lebanese security sources, that the attack was launched by Palestinian factions.
In the morning, Hezbollah, the dominant force in southern Lebanon, said it would support “all measures” Palestinian factions may take against Israel after the police stormed al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem city and arrested hundreds of worshipers.
The rocket attack came following a series of four Israeli attacks on Syria that claimed the lives of two military advisers of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Tehran vowed to respond to the attacks, while Damascus warned of “total escalation”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was being briefed on the rocket attack, which took place on the first day of the Passover festival, and would hold an assessment with military and security leaders, his office said.
The IDF has not yet responded to the attack. Tel Aviv will likely calculate its response very well, as any escalation could lead to a fierce response by Hezbollah.
