On July 24, a refugee was killed and at least three others were wounded when a salvo of rockets hit Kuwait al-Rahmah, a village that was recently built in the southern part of the Turkish-occupied Syrian area of Afrin to house refugees.
The rockets were reportedly launched from the outskirts of the town of Tell Rifaat in the northern Aleppo countryside. The town and its surroundings are held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Syrian government forces.
Syrian opposition sources held the SDF responsible for the deadly rocket attack. The group is yet to address these accusations.
The Turkish military and its proxies responded to the attack by shelling Tell Rifaat and its surroundings. No casualties or material losses were reported, however.
The attack may have been carried out by the SDF in respond to recent Turkish drone strikes that killed five of its fighters and commanders. On July 20, two SDF fighters were killed when a Turkish combat drone targeted their vehicle in the outskirts of the town of Kobane in the northwestern countryside of Aleppo. Later on July 23, two commanders and a fighter of the SDF’s all-female force, the Women’s Protection Units, were killed in a Turkish drone strike that targeted their vehicle on a road near the town of al-Qamishli in the northern al-Hasakah countryside.
Turkey could use the rocket attack on Kuwait al-Rahmah as a pretext to launch its long-awaited operation against the SDF. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated on more than one occasion that Tell Rifaat and the town of Manbij, to the east, will be the main targets of any new Turkish military operation in northern Syria.
