On February 20, two soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army were killed when ISIS terrorists attacked a post they were manning in the western desert of Deir Ezzor.
According to the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the two victims were both from the town of Hamoryah in the Eastern Ghouta of Damascus.
In what appears to be a response to the attack, warplanes of the Russian Aerospace Forces carried out a series of airstrikes on hideouts of ISIS in the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle and on al-Bishri mount, which lays along the border between Raqqa and Deir Ezzor.
A day earlier, more than 70 Russian airstrikes targeted hideouts of ISIS in different parts of the central region. This was the largest wave of airstrikes to hit the region in February.
The deadly attack in Deir Ezzor’s desert indicates that ISIS cells in central Syria are willing to strike whenever and wherever they find a chance.
ISIS insurgency in central Syria will not likely end anytime soon. Nevertheless, the situation in the region appears to be slowly improving.
