On November 27, a fighter jet of the Egyptian Air Force (EAF) crashed during an exercise in a military training area as a result of a technical malfunction.

“As part of the implementation of the air force training activity today, Sunday 11/27/2022, a fighter jet crashed in one of the training areas as a result of a technical malfunction,” Colonel Gharib Abdel Hafez, a spokesman for the Egyptian military, said in a statement.

The spokesman said that the crew survived after successfully ejecting from the fighter jet, adding that the crash didn’t result in any material losses.

“Necessary measures are being taken by the competent authorities,” the spokesman added.

The Egyptian military didn’t reveal the type of the fighter jet that was lost in the crashed, or where exactly the incident took place.

The fighter jet was likely one of the types the EAF typically use for conversion training, like the American-made F-16C/D, the French-made Rafale EM and the Russian-made MiG-29M2, or possibly an advanced trainer like the French-made Alpha Jet.

Egypt has been working to modernize its air force to cope with the ever increasing security challenges in the Middle East and North Africa since the outcast of President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Currently, the EAF is heavily involved in border protection and counter-terrorism operations. Earlier this month, the quick and professional intervention of the air force helped put an end to a large-scale attack by ISIS terrorists on a key city near the Suez Canal.
