President Donald Trump said on April 13 that the United States “may stop by Cuba” after it is done with his war on Iran, in a clear warning to the island nation.
“Cuba is a failing nation, and we’re going to do this, and we may stop by Cuba after we’re finished with this,” Trump told reporters at the White House, referring to the ongoing war against Iran.
“Cuba is a nation that was … horribly run for many years,” he continued.
“We have a lot of great Cuban Americans, all of whom just about voted for me, and they were treated very badly. In many cases, family members have been killed. They’ve been beaten up and mugged and terrible things happened in Cuba,” the American president added.
Cuba lost its main oil supply line earlier this year when Trump ordered a special operation to capture Nicolas Maduro, the long-term leader of Cuban ally Venezuela. More than 30 Cuban troops who were guarding Maduro’s residency in Caracas were killed in the operation.
Tensions between the two countries began to rise afterwards, with Trump even vowing to starve the communist-ruled nation of oil.
Russia has since shipped oil to the country, reliving its energy crisis, at least to some extent. A floating power ship operated by the Turkish company Karpowership also returned to Cuba earlier this month to support the island’s strained electricity system.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said in an interview with NBC News aired on April 12 that there is “no justification” for the U.S. to launch an attack on his country, warning that any such move would be met with resistance.
“An invasion to Cuba would have costs. … It would affect the security of Cuba, the United States and of the region,” he said through a translator in his first American broadcast interview.
“If that happens, there will be fighting, and there will be a struggle, and we will defend ourselves, and if we need to die, we’ll die, because as our national anthem says, ‘Dying for the homeland is to live,’” he continued.
“Before making that decision, which is so irrational, there is a logic, that is, the logic of dialogue, to engage in discussions, to debate and try to reach agreements that would move us away from confrontation,” the Cuban president added.
Considering recent U.S. military operations in both Venezuela then in Iran, Trump’s threat to Cuba should be taken very seriously.
In fact, it won’t be far-fetched to assume that the U.S. is already drafting military plans against the island nation, which has been under an embargo since the late 1950s.
