The US-led coalition had withdrawn most of its troops from the al-Tanf garrison in southeastern Syria to Jordan, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on January 3.
According to the London-based monitoring group, the coalition took the step out of fear that pro-Iranian forces in Syria or Iraq may attack the garrison with suicide drones or rocket to honor the memory of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of the Popular Mobilization Units, and Iran’s Quds Force Commander, Maj. Gen. Qassim Soleimani, who were assassinated by the US exactly two years ago.
“The coalition kept a number of its troops at the base within special shelters that are difficult to penetrate, and the bulk of the troops withdrew to Jordan,” the SOHR’s report reads.
The US-led coalition also ordered its main proxy group at al-Tanf, the Revolutionary Commando Army (MaT), to deploy its fighters outside of the garrison.
Around 200 US troops and some 300 MaT fighters are usually deployed at al-Tanf garrison. The US-led coalition maintains a 55 kilometers no-fly, no-drive zone around the garrison.
On October 20, al-Tanf came under attack. The garrison was targeted with five suicide drones and indirect fire. The attack resulted in some serious material damage. However, there were no casualties. On December 14, a warplane of the Royal Air Force shot down one of two small drones that breached al-Tanf’s no-fly zone.
US officials believe that Iran or Iranian-backed forces were behind both the October 20 attack and the December 14 drone incident.
The US claims that its forces are present in al-Tanf to counter ISIS in Syria’s central and southern regions. However, the garrison was in fact established in 2016 to block a strategic highway that links the Syrian capital, Damascus, with Iraqi capital, Baghdad.

or the SAA but the US has an airbase in Jordan probably 10 minutes away which would be their immediate response. I thought the US boosted their numbers there last year by another 200 so 400 plus in total. It’s not about the numbers there it’s what happens if they are attacked. A bit like those US Police videos where one needs help and in minutes they are like flies coming from all directions. Remember when the US was going to pull out of al-Tanf and the local fighters turned and asked if they could join up with the SAA. But the US stayed and a few fighters joined Assad but most stayed with the Yanks. The Yanks must pay well or they have big tongues.
Are you serious? 300 soldiers are nor enough to stop their enemies like Russia, Assad, Turkey, Iran and Kataib Hezbollah.
In a full on battle no but there is no full on battle is there. But it is not just the 300 or whatever is there is it. It is also what backs them up as they are not left on their own are they. There are the US bases just across the border in Jordan as well as those in Iraq plus those in Cypress . Oh did you forget the Cypress base was used to bomb Syria when Trumps sobbing daughter begged her daddy to punish Assad for when al Qaida gassed some town and said Assad did it. So as I said it is like attacking a lone Policeman. Within minutes they will be swarming from everywhere. So you are just talking sh it and stirring the pot as usual.
In vietnam the tactics the NLF used was to attack destroy then melt away,just deny the land to the invader,they should even launch missiles against those bastards in Jordan.
Typical terrorist/freedom fighter tactic when they don’t have the manpower. A few can tie up many chasing ghosts. Even those big battles in Vietnam where the Yanks won and the Viet Cong / NVA would melt away and then return a week or two later. There was a saying the VC only controlled the land they were standing on at that particular time but that was also true of the Yanks. That happened in many wars and also happening in a lot of those wars in Africa today .
215 US servicemen were killed in one attack in Beirut. There is no backup although there were many assets nearby. The only thing that would have helped was a “Heads Up” from the Mossad (they knew about the attack) but Israel let it happen hoping it would drag the US in deeper. The US was completely out of Lebanon six months later.
Yes I remember that and there was another in Nairobi although I think that was mostly Kenyans that died . I think there was another in Tanzania at same / similar time but can’t remember much about that one. Wasn’t there a three way civil war going on in Lebanon at that time.
No for Syria the best course of action is to soften them up with numerous drone strikes first using larger and larger drones more and more often . Don’t let the USSA and their ISIS allies get a proper sleep there ever again.Destroy all their equipment then attack and take USSA prisoners to exchange for al USSA forces leaving Syria.

Does this mean Al-Tanf is now open to reintegration into Syria? Can SAA now move in? Maybe Russia setup a base?
