Photos and video footage providing a clear look at Russia’s latest precision-guided small diameter gliding munition, the UMPB D-30SN, have surfaced online.

The UMPB, translated from Russian УМПБ [Универсальный Межвидовой Планирующий Боеприпас], stands for “Universal Interspecific Glide Munition”. The munition is very similar to the United States’ GBU-39 Small Diameter Bomb (SDB).

Photos posted to social networks on May 23 showed several D-30SN munitions loaded under the wing of a Su-34 fighter bomber of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

A video that surfaced online later on the same day showed a Su-34 dropping at least four D-30SN munitions over the special military operation zone in Ukraine.

The existence of the D-30SN was first revealed in March, when Ukraine media shared photos showing the wreckage of one such munition.

The D-30SN has a diameter of 300 mm and is armed with a warhead weighing some 100 kg. It is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. The munition was reportedly designed to be dropped from warplanes or launched from the ground with the assistance of a rocket motor from the Tornado-S 300 mm multiple launch system.

The exact range of the D-30SN is unknown. However, taking into account the characteristics of the munition, it is safe to assume that it has a range of well over 100 kilometers when launched from air or the ground.

Small diameter gliding munitions like the D-30SN have a small radar cross-section and minimal infrared print, which makes them extremely difficult to detect and intercept.

Earlier this year, Ukraine received the ground-launched version of the American-made SDB. However, Russian electronic warfare rendered the system useless, according to recent reports by Western media. On the other side, Russian media reported that the tests of the D-30SN were going successfully. Nevertheless, it is still unclear if the munition has officially entered service with the Russian military.

The fast development of the D-30SN highlights the growing capabilities of the Russian military industrial complex and its ability to adapt to the emerging needs of the Russian military.

small diameter bombs means a small diameter. gbu-39 has a diameter of 190mm and spear has a diameter of 180mm. they also have special pylons that makes an aircraft carry a lot of them, like the small jas-39e can carry 16 gbu-39/spear at once while also carrying 2 irst at the same time.
