Gennady Laguta, the former head of the Ukrainian Kherson regional state administration, has passed away at the age of 49, as announced by the current head of the part of the region under Ukrainian control. One of the deputies of the Kherson Regional Council, Sergey Khlan, shed light on the tragic circumstances of his death and reported that Mr Laguta had committed suicide by taking a lethal dose of pills.
Laguta headed the Kherson regional administration from October 2021 to July 2022. Before he took the post, Laguta had a diverse career, serving in the State Security Service and later as an assistant consultant to People’s Deputy Igor Kolikhaev. Furthermore, he led the “We Live Here” party and even ran for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
According to Mr Khlan, the former head of the Kherson region, who also led the local military administration, was driven to suicide by suspicion of surrendering the region to Russian forces.
“It was he who was accused of surrendering the Kherson region, although there is not a word in his duties about preparing for defense, such tasks did not apply at the time of the full-scale invasion and the leadership of the troops. But someone needs to be blamed for the loss of the South, right? Need to throw someone to the crowd? Well, they threw him,” the deputy wrote.
According to Khlan, Laguta was the only one of the representatives of the regional authorities who did not escape from the Kherson region, provided the removal of documents, evacuation of people etc.
“Do you know that no one in the Presidential Administration answered the calls three days before the invasion? They just ignored the calls of the head of the southern region. That’s at the same time when the region was lost … By the way, that is why there will never be an investigation of the first days of the war with these authorities (currently in power in Kiev). Because there will be so many unpleasant secrets discovered …”, — added Khlan.
On the other hand, some sources supposed that the former head of the Kherson region was killed because he knew too much about the early days of the Russian military operations in Ukraine. In February 2023, he also received suspicion from the SBU of fraud and forgery of documents.
He was also accused that in the spring of 2022 he turned to a local businesswoman with a request to give him an SUV “for official purposes.” In July, the official registered the car for himself and sold it to his subordinate. For this, he faced up to 12 years in prison.
