Russian strikes hit a site where Ukraine stored Sapsan tactical ballistic missiles, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on August 17, just a few days after the country’s Federal Security Service (FSB) revealed an operation that stalled a plan by Kiev to mass produce the system.
The Sapsan, also known as Hirm and Grom, is believed to have a maximum range of 700 kilometers and a warhead weighing 480 kg.
“Operational/tactical aircraft, attack unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops and artillery of the Russian groups of forces struck a storage site of Sapsan theater-level missiles and their parts, ammunition depots and warehouses of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles and temporary deployment areas of Ukrainian armed formations and foreign mercenaries in 142 locations,” the ministry said in its daily briefing.
The ministry didn’t provide any further details, like where exactly the missile storage site is located and how it was targeted.
On August 14, the FSB announced that a joint special operation with the MoD inflicted “colossal” damage on a series of sites involved in the development, production and storage of the Sapsan across Ukraine.
The security service obtained intelligence on the secret missile program, which was then targeted by the ministry. Chemical and mechanical plants in Pavlograd, Dneptropetrovsk Region, as well as the “Zvezda” plant and State Scientific Research Institute of Chemical Products in Shostka, Sumy Region were struck during the operation.
The FSB warned that the missile would have been capable of hitting a large part of Western Russia, including the capital Moscow.
An official from the FSB had told TASS that the missile was being developed with financial support from Germany and assistance from foreign specialists.
FSB-intercepted communications revealed that Ukraine planned to produce upwards of 200 Sapsan missiles every single month.
The Russian special operation dealt a major blow to Kiev, which was likely preparing to escalate ahead of the summit between President Vladimir Putin and United States President Donlad Trump in Alaska on August 15.
