On January 10, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Hamas Movement, released dramatic video footage of its fighters ambushing a unit of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) inside a tunnel in the northern part of the Gaza Strip.
The footage shows the Israeli unit being lured to a tunnel shaft in a building rigged with cameras. The troops use a quadcopter drone and a dog to scout the building. However, they fail to detect the cameras or Hamas fighters waiting for them in the tunnel.
After entering the tunnel, the Israeli troops came under fire from the fighters. The exact results of the engagement are unclear.
The complex ambush took place in the Gaza City district of Sheikh Radwan late December, according to the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades.
The IDF has lost 186 troops since the start of ground operations in Gaza, many of whom were special forces operators and military engineers who were ambushed near tunnel shafts.
Earlier this week, six reservists were killed when explosives intended for demolishing a tunnel detonated during activity in central Gaza’s al-Bureij refugee camp.
A vast network of tunnels used for smuggling and warfare purposes exists under Gaza. The underground tunnel network allows Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions to store and shield weapons, gather and move underground, communicate, train, launch offensive attacks, transport hostages, and retreat without being detected by the IDF. This network of tunnels is colloquially referred to as the Gaza metro.
The IDF released on January 11 a video of a Hamas tunnel in southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, where it believes hostages were previously held by the group. The tunnel was located by the Commando Brigade, the elite Yahalom combat engineering unit, and other special forces, and connects to a wide underground network, according to the IDF.
The IDF claims that it has so far discovered and destroyed hundreds of tunnels under Gaza. However, fighters of Hamas and other armed factions are still moving with much freedom in most of the Strip, which indicates that the Gaza metro is still functioning.
